In our last show, we introduced you to Gurdjieff's teaching that our body or machine can be studied as a food factory and that in order to develop into a conscious man or woman, the introduction of the first conscious shock (self-remembering) and then the second conscious shock (transmutation of negative emotions) were key elements in the process.
We said previously that man is a half developed being, that nature brings him to a certain point and leaves him to develop further through his own will and effort. We are each a chemical factory, the substances we ingest, the food we eat, the air we breathe and the impressions we take in cause chemical processes to take place in the body, and if we add certain intentional efforts on our own, the distillation and refinement of these substances will be taken to a whole new level and bring one to awakening and the development of a permanent principle of consciousness, a soul.
Every effort a man makes, he makes by will, and that is how he develops his will. At the same time as a man accumulates these higher energies, he must be ever on his guard not to lose them in a moment of a passionate expression of negative emotions. He must not express negative emotions on the contrary he must transmute them also, and turn lead into gold.
It all starts with the effort to self remember. If it is so desirable why is it so difficult to do? Because it is necessary to develop the ability to hold attention on certain fine matters being produced by the body.
The process of digestion in man consists of the rarefaction of the food, air and perceptions he takes in. This matter is matter in a molecular state. It is volatile and difficult to control and contain. It is however, subject to man's attention.
Controlled attention is therefore the possible vehicle for self-consciousness.
A man in second state, we call half-dream state or waking sleep, does not control his attention and therefore this fine matter that is produced in him every day diffuses from him in all directions. We can almost see it diffusing from him in certain conditions. Every time something catches his attention, a pretty girl, a flashy car, gossip, a television program, the news, excessive talk, this energy passes out of him quite soon after it has been manufactured.
This diffusing of man's finest energy may escape from healthily as sex energy, explode from him as irritation, leak from him in self pity or envy or competition, but most often it simply leaks from him in a state of fascination in which he loses himself in a book, an object, a thought or sensation taking this fine energy along with it, sometimes leaving a man's body vacant of even the rudiments of psychic individuality. This state of fascination constitutes man usual state.
In more productive work, a man learns by the use of attention to keep his fascination in a certain direction. For example, a good shoemaker remains for an hour 'fascinated ' by the making of a pair of shoes, a politician remains fascinated by the delivery of his speech, a woman remains fascinated by the letter she is writing. Without this holding of attention, no good work of any kind can be done.
There are three categories in this expenditure of fine matter. The matter may drift out of us from object to object, or it may be attracted to something which holds our attention, or we may intentionally hold our attention in one desired direction. Of these three the best results are obtained when we intentionally hold our attention on something.
All three of these are mechanical and the outcome is that man can only be aware of one thing at a time. This is his ordinary state. He can be aware of either the person he is speaking to, or of his own words, he can be aware of pain in his body or someone else's distress. He can be aware of a scene or of his own thoughts. Usually he can be aware of himself in some way, thus losing attention on the outside world or vice versa.
This is one of the reasons that love and sex have such an extraordinary power over men, because they an experience an intense awareness of themselves and another at the same time. This brings with it a foretaste of Self Consciousness.
One of the first techniques taught in Fourth Way Schools is the intentional division of attention between oneself and the outside world. Techniques to build the will are necessary to maintain such divided attention over a long period of time.
