Man I love Spanish Mak. I'm surprised he didn't cut your line without a steel leader. I can't tell you how much hardware I've lost from them. Dude that drum put up a hell of a fight. Nice!

What’s good Joshua. This will be my first year Spanish Mack fishing from the pier. What size steel leader would you recommended when using a gotcha plug?
@JoshuaBFishing
3 жыл бұрын
@@nucreative4556 I can't really say, I've never used a gotcha plug. I've only ever used finger mullet. But the idea is as short of steel leader as you can get away with, so 18" long or so. Basically something longer than the Makeral you are targeting.
@oafishing

Sometimes the do get me and cut the line. He sure did and it’s exactly what I needed, a good fight and a big fish.
@oafishing
3 жыл бұрын
@@nucreative4556 gotchas can be killer for Spanish macks from the pier. I recommend 30 or 40 lb mono and not bother with steel leader. Just check the mono for frays after each fish you catch and retie as you feel necessary. I you do go with wire choose a stranded wire (1x7) no more than 20 lb strength. The stranded wire is more flexible vs regular. The regular will eventually kink and may keep your lure from working right. Steel leader can minimize the amount of bites you get, but those fish definitely won’t cut you off. Also if you use a swivel to tie your leader sometimes the spanish macks will eat the swivel and take your whole rig. I prefer a line to line connection (uni to uni). Hopefully this helps.

With that Spanish, if you grab him from the top (dorsal) with your index and thumb on the back of the gill plate (toward the tail), you'll get much better control to dehook. Great video though. Nice to see a local putting out vids.

I launch out of white point by the Maxwell Gunter Recreation Area. It's Eglin property so you will have to get an Eglin recreational pass. It does NOT have a boat ramp so you CAN'T launch a boat from there. It's a good place for kayaking and paddle boarding. You can get the rec pass online at eglin.isportsman.net

People don’t realize how strong these are. They put up a heck of a fight. There are some that look like Grouper in there lol. Literally they look like it around the rocks when you see em they are so big. I saw some eating off the rocks and getting vertical in the water. Their tails come out of the water. I couldn’t believe the size of some of them.
@oafishing

They certainly put up a great fight and their size is incredible! Catching them and keeping them off the structure is challenging and that’s what I love. Especially from a kayak because they pull that kayak with ease.
