Jan and I took our Kayaks to Whangamata and paddled out to the local islands. Hauturu Island, Maukaha Rocks, Whenuakura (Donut) Island and Rawengaiti Island. after kayaking around for a while we had lunch at Hauturu Island. This Island has a sandy inlet for access.
From there we went off to Whenuakura Island, better known as Donut Island. In the centre of the Island you will find the most stunningly beautiful lagoon. The Lagoon was formed from a collapsed volcanic blowhole. Entry to the Lagoon is via a narrow, but 12m high cave.
Care must be taken when entering if there is a sea swell. Also once inside there are strict rules that visitors are asked to follow. This is for your safety and to preserve the Lagoons nature.
If you have any concerns about visiting the Lagoon, then it is recommended you take one of the organised trips.
