𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐳𝐨𝐧, 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐳𝐨𝐧 and her husband are credited for starting this movement to protect this part of area.
It all started in 1904 when Mary Curzon and Baroness Curzon the wife of 𝐕𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚 that time, Lord Curzon of Kedleston visited this area and they failed to see One Horned Rhino for which this area was famous for, so they wer concerned and they decided to take urgent measures to protect
the dwindling species of this area.
On 1st June 1905, the Kaziranga Proposed Reserve Forest was created with an area of 232 square km. Over the next 3 years the area was extended by 152 sq Km to the banks of Brahmaputra river. In 1908 Kaziranga was designated as a “ “Reserve Forest” Now the forest is approx 𝟏𝟎𝟗𝟎 𝐒𝐪 𝐊𝐦
In 1916 it was redesignated as “ 𝐊𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 and remained till 1938 when hunting was prohibited and visitors were permited to enter the park. Again in 1934 it was renamed as 𝐊𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐡𝐚.
Finally in 1950 it was named as 𝐊𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 and in 1985 it as desgnated by 𝐔𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐎 𝐚𝐬 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞
