Experiencing the magic of mountains at sunset and sunrise is a thrilling experience for photographers. The stills and the video of Kedarnath Mountain range were taken during our visit in November 2005 just before the annual closure of Kedarnath Temple for six months. Our visit was made about eight years before the devastating floods of June 2013. We went up to Gauri Kunt from Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary by car From Gauri Kunt we did the 14-kilometer trek to Kedarnath Temple. The peaks of Chorabari Glacier are visible on the route from Chopta to Kedarnath. While trekking on foot to Kedarnath one could see the origin of Mandakini River from the glacier as it existed before the river Mandakini changed course in 2013. The temple town of Kedarnath is surrounded by majestic ranges. The lofty snow-capped Kedarnath Peak and Kedarnath Dome are all about 6000 meters that is 20,000 feet.
They make an astonishing backdrop at the GMVN where we stayed. That is the Gadwal Mandal Vigas Nigam Hotel. One can see the range of mountains from an altitude of approximately 6000 meters at the slope of Kedarnath Peak to the temple town of 3800 meters that is 12,500 feet.
Gurgling waters from the glacier which forms the Mandakini River can be heard throughout. The majestic range rises within about 4 kilometers running from east to west. The absence of trees and bushes on the mountain slopes was striking.
