Does deleting a post or page deletes it's attached media files from WordPress as well? Nope. By default, when you delete content from your website, regardless if it’s a post, a page, a product, or any kind of post type, WordPress keeps the media files previously associated with it, even if after the removal of your content they are not used anywhere else.
Deleting a post or page should delete attached images or media files from WordPress. Otherwise extra unnecessary media files will add up in system forever wasting hosting space and slowing down site. You don't want that. Delete post or page with all files attached to it. Delete associated media upon page or post deletion.
Delete all of the attached media files to your posts once they get deleted from the system. Get rid of all unused attachments and images from WordPress. Delete images that are not used - with posts, pages, custom post types, WooCommerce product posts and also posts from easy digital downloads once they are deleted.
Go to plugins and search for 'Delete Attached Media'. Install and activate and that is it. From plugin settings you can see which media files are unused but that is an extra.
So create a page, upload image to it. Delete the page. Delete from trash and see in media library. Uploaded image to page will not be there. See, file deleted when page was permanently deleted. File will automatically be deleted once trash is deleted.
You can restore pages, post from trash, right? That is why media file was still there in case you want to restore post or page when you deleted it. But once trash is emptied, image or media attached with all trashed posts will be deleted. A soft delete that places your post, page, or custom post type in Trash will not trigger the removal of its child attachments. The purge happens when you empty your trash. When you delete a post, page or custom post type, plugin tries to determine if its child attachments are used anywhere else on your website. If they are, plugin does not remove them, to prevent broken links.
Trash is deleted after 30 days by default in WordPress. If you want to empty trash sooner, you can add a one liner in wp config file.
define('EMPTY_TRASH_DAYS', 1 )
Change days number according to your need and that's it. Alternatively you can use a plugin named as 'Change Empty Trash Time' to adjust time to empty trash.
This is how you can auto clean media library each time you delete a post, page, product or custom post type. Also, alternatives to this plugin are 'Autoremove Attachments' and 'Delete Post with Attachments'.
