Just drove 2 hours one way to get a group of feeder pigs. At this time a year everything around us are either left over show pigs that didn’t make the cut but they still want a high price for them. or some very sorry looking pigs that some one bought at a sale barn cheap and trying to resell them at a large profit. And like you mentioned no parents on sight. Although it was a half a day driving I have good health pigs. And that’s worth it in my opinion.

@@RaisedHomesteading I'm in New Jersey and been raising breeding stock on pasture from 2020 - 2022 on pasture (2 acres elctric wire 3 pigs to start. we began the operation with Duroc Yorkshire cross sow bred to a berk york red wattle boar. Then we keep 2 best guilts and bred them to pure berkshire boar. Starting over next year with our most docile mothering gentle sow who throws some awesome litters black and white spotted sow who we get all black and white piglets (half are spotted the rest look just like a berkshire would) - and 2 of her guilts from her spring litter as breeding stock moving forward. and probably going to keep 1-2 barrows as feeders. Just wanted to share my insight cause I know people are looking for ways to create wonderful breeding stock. We only hand feed our breeding stock and try and watch their weight and feed them a mixture of grains corn grasses fruits vegetables, even meats like chicken and venison from farm and broths, hand picked hickory nuts, peaches apples pears from the farm. the combination of the diet and a natural habit and controlled diet is what will create superior breeding stock.

@@RaisedHomesteading Your pigs setup is nice and they look happy and healthy. Great work.

@Sean-ry4fi Sounds good. We avoid any meats because pigs are susceptible to catching any disease that other animals have through ingesting meat

So, how do you know which ones are breeders and which ones get castrated? Those piglets sure got excited to see that water. Great to see the good care they get from you all👍

They all become feeder pigs and get castrated if nobody tells me they’re needing a boar for breeding. It’s unbearable out there, I thought about getting in the water myself 😆

@@RaisedHomesteading Got it! Makes sense... I thought maybe there was some special trait that made them more suitable for breeding. Thanks for clearing that up👍

@JumbleTronChannel there are some characteristics that you look for in feeders vs breeders. Probably a good topic to cover

My pig’s have been enjoying their mud holes. I’ve been trying to get one of my sows bred but she hasn’t took. I raised some good pigs from her last year. Just put the last two in the freezer a couple months ago. She’s light cross and my boar is full Poland China. My duroc sow won’t breed so I’m gonna have to do something with her.

They definitely need the mud. I didn’t mention light skin hogs can also sunburn. That stinks that the sow won’t breed. How old is she?

She’s a little over 3 years old. My two sows were show pigs in their younger days. I don’t know if that has anything to do with it but it makes me wonder.

@michaelmiller4252 It very well might. Show pigs are often fed or given shots of growth hormones and steroids that can affect fertility in some animals. It can also affect meat quality and taste of show pigs and why most aren’t sold for market when left. Before they’re entered into show feeding regiments they likely aren’t problematic

Glen, could you use a mister on a timer for the Hogs, have it on the tops of the fence and turn on every few hours ? or would that be a waste of to much water.

Might not be a bad idea really, I do like to be up there checking on them when it’s hot but definitely might be something to think about for when I can’t
