Gaps are hard to maintain closed after orthodontic treatment because there is usually a tooth size discrepancy between the upper and lower jaw and/or jaw tooth discrepancy (too much space in jaws for the size of teeth).
Retainers are needed for life to maintain space closure. Sometimes enlarging teeth via veneers, bonding, or crowns will be needed for stable results.
