Kees van Dongen is a Dutch painter known for his Fauvist portraits characterized by bold palettes and his subjects with large almond eyes. He is part of the avant-garde movement that includes Henri Matisse, Maurice de Vlaminck and André Derain and uses colors that clash to describe sensual representations of the French bourgeoisie and the wealth that allows them to lead this lifestyle. Born Cornelis Theodorus Maria van Dongen on January 26, 1877 in Delsfshaven in the Netherlands, his use of expressive colors and lines became his signature and the inspiration he drew from his travels set him apart from his peers, the French artists with whom he exhibited in Paris at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1926, van Dongen received the Legion of Honor and, in 1927, the Order of the Crown. Van Dongen died on May 28, 1968 in Monte Carlo at the age of 91.
