This has to be one of the most artfully made 32 Bit game ever made of that era. It is staunch proof that the SEGA Saturn was more than capable of transparency, shading, and any other tricks the PS One could do.

More than capable? Not sure why this was even in question, ever. The Saturn makes the PS1 look like a joke in comparison as far as 2D games. Then by the time Virtua Fighter 2 came out, the game rand at like twice the framerate, a higher resolution than ANY console at the time could output, and with fully texture mapped polygons. Fun Fact: There’s a little-known game that was inspired by this game. It was called Rabi-Ribi where you play in a bullet hell platformer similar to this. The main character is also a bunny girl and the leotard reminds the creator of samus, making the game a metroidvania. If you like Keio Flying Squadron or Touhou, give Rabi-Ribi a try.
@SaturnMemories

Eh, I kinda doubt it. The bunny girl trope didn't originate with Keio Flying Squadron. Look up the Daicon IV opening animation from 1983. Rami and just about every bunny girl since was based on the Daicon bunny girl, who was in turn based on Playboy bunnies. :P

This is why I usually prefer Japanese voice acting over English voice acting if they do it this awkwardly. However, I am quite surprised that this game even had an English translation at all. Normally, these kinds of games were left exclusively for Japanese release on the Saturn, so this is actually a breathe of fresh air.
@SaturnMemories

Medachod The VAs might leave something to be desired, but the translation/localization is really quite good. Watanabe-Robins out of San Francisco handled it. Try watching the intro to my playthrough of the first game. You'll see what I mean.
@Medachod
9 жыл бұрын
Saturn Memories In all honesty, all translations of Japanese are normally rough; given most of Japanese is not meant to be comprehended by foreign speakers. So I do not really care for accuracy of the translation; just so long as it is translating it enough that you know it is the correct story. My only peeve is with VA and nothing more than that, especially if it is done bad. But, I am usually not aware of a bad translation when I see one; unless they put no effort into the storytelling and translate it very sloppily.

Robert Lopresti I think it's more surprising that it was ever translated at all. The Keio series is unabashedly Japanese, and aside from changing Pochi's name to "Spot," JVC made no attempts to hide this fact. Really odd for a game from this era.

@Watcher3223

Saturn Memories You're correct that this isn't a Sega property. But, my point was that if JVC wanted to distribute a localized version for the North American market, Sega of America would still have to approve it first. Chances are that SoA would probably not approve of it because of Bernie Stollar and his attitude towards games that didn't appeal to what he believed to be American tastes. As an aside, this was a major reason why Working Designs left Sega as a third party licensee and started localizing and publishing games for Sony up until they made it too difficult for WD to continue operating.
