At 12 months old, Keira’s family brought her to a Shriners Children's screening clinic because they suspected she had clubfoot. It took seven months from the first appointment for Keira to be diagnosed with bulbaspinal poliomyelitis, a very rare form of polio. It affected her entire right side, causing crural monoplegia and scoliosis. When she was 9, it was discovered that Keira lacked an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee. After a lengthy surgery, surgeons at Shriners Hospitals for Children were able to build Keira an ACL. She now has full functionality of her left knee. Keira has also had several smaller surgeries, more than a decade of occupational and physical therapy, and more than a dozen AFO/KFOs. Keira is very active in sports with the local disabled athletes sports club. She competes on the national level in archery, track and field. She hopes to one day compete in archery at the Paralympics.
