My husband and I had instrumental Celtic music at our small wedding reception, and that’s when my new father-in-law told me that Danny Boy was his favorite. I made sure we had it played for him at his service when he passed 11 years later. Always makes me cry, too. So sorry for your loss. ❤

There is something about this tune , the melody, how it is played or sung. It is being played here by Keith with that emotional gut feeling this song evokes by many. So brave of him ...he is never afraid to show his emotions through his playing! What a masterfull giant!!!

There have been many great pianists but the three most influential in jazz chronologically are Art Tatum, Bill Evans, and Keith Jarrett. Each one stretched the boundaries of playing beyond any of their contemporaries. All of us that play are influenced by these three great artists.

Jarrett's version of this old song creates deep feelings in my heart. Why? The way he takes care of the beautiful melody line, while building up a whole story - purely instrumental. I follow your family reunion with Tatum, Evans and Jarret as the one who perhaps carries the torch for new generations? Perhaps Brad Mehldau gets into the rack? Anyway, giants, they all are!

First, thanks "VideoFun" for sharing this "most watched" version. Just spotted what "Rog5446" wrote (two weeks ago) that, "This is in fact the Londonderry Air (melody). It's only Danny Boy, when someone sings the lyrics that my Great Great uncle Fred Weatherly wrote." Reminded me of something Nelms123 wrote here three months ago: "It is really amazing... but I'm going to wager that you know the lyrics... those who do not, don't yet know the depth of this tune. I like to phrase everything to flow through the words of the song, and i think Keith is doing that here. Especially when it comes to the final verse, i like to play it as if the mother is singing to her son from her grave. Brilliant tune." [Nelms123 reminded me of] something the great jazz pianist Marian McPartland said (to pianist Oscar Peterson), about witnessing a live performance at a club by a great jazz saxophonist, who came down off the stand looking disconsolate. "What's wrong?" Marian asked him. The reply: "I forgot the lyric . . . " The composer of the ancient Irish melody is unknown but an Englishman (!) wrote the words the world so loves. Fred Weatherly (he wrote a between-the-two-World-Wars classic, ROSES OF PICARDY (Find Sinatra's Great Songs From Great Britain album with arranger Robert Farnon for the retire-the-trophy version of that one.) Love the back story on DANNY BOY's lyric [at Wikipedia]. Thanks for posting, VIDEOFUN. Initially written to a tune other than "Londonderry Air", English lawyer and lyricist Frederic Weatherly wrote the words to "Danny Boy" in Bath, Somerset in 1910. After his Irish-born sister-in-law Margaret (known as Jess) in the United States sent him a copy of "Londonderry Air" in 1913, Weatherly modified the lyrics of "Danny Boy" to fit the rhyme and meter of "Londonderry Air". The first recording was in 1915, so DANNY BOY is barely a century old. Poignant thought. Yes, "Don't forget the words" when you're playing the melody. Celebrating great old songs each day at SinatraFamily.com -- their "Forums" -- "Siriusly Sinatra" -- MY FAVORITE VERSION -- YOURS TOO? You're only as good as your latest posting. This one shared an hour ago: sinatrafamily.com/forum/showthread.php/50225-My-Favorite-Version-%28yours-too-%29/page22

Reminds me of something Mrs. Oscar Hammerstein said, to a radio interviewer who had just played "Jerome Kern's OL' MAN RIVER" -- "My husband," she said, wrote Ol' Man River. Jerry wrote (impersonates the notes) 'dum-dum-DUM-DUM.' The fact remains that knowledge of the poignant lyric is what drives jazz virtuosos in their 'live' improvisations on the melodies. As the late great English born jazz pianist Marian McPartland said (to pianist Oscar Peterson), about witnessing a live performance at a club by a great jazz saxophonist -- who came down off the stand looking disconsolate. "What's wrong?" Marian asked him. The reply: "I forgot the lyric . . . " Thanks for sharing, Rog5446 -- quoted your note in one of my own (above) a moment ago.

Y Melody for you in te nigh

When I was a young student of music, I had tendency to play the piano faster than it must to do right things, looking for to get virtuousisme. And the teacher say to me frecuently: Don't play so speedy... *The virtuousisme it's to the music, like the overpiouship to the Saintliness*.(El virtuosismo es a la música, lo que la beateria a la sa😢ntidad). Afterward, I study Music History where we knew the most famous celebrity about music of all times, and I remember the name of a philosopher of century VI, *Boecio*, that all people say he gave the best and shortess definition of *music** in the history. Yes, indeed, he only employ seven words in latin: *Quisquis in sesse ipsum decendit, musica intelligit* that want to say: *Anyone be capable of bring down to himself, that one know what is music*. (Cualquiera que sea capaz, de descender a sí mismo, *ese* sabe lo que es música). I tell you that quickly, because only it's necessary to hear and see how to play Keith Jarrett the tune Danny Boy to understand the best and brief definition of music by Boecio. I have had a pleasure.
