Hey Mr TJ. I just bought a McMillen K Board Pro 4 on the basis of your review to go with my Hydrasynth. Always enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for your kind words. I am really liking the K-Board Pro4. Make sure you also get the KM MIDI Expander. You'll need that with Hydrasynth and other external gear. Cheers, TJ

@@jonathanredman8497 The expander is a host that also allows you to power the Pro4, convert USB to MIDI, and stay connected to your computer with the Pro4 software via USB. You'll need to have the software online to tweak the Pro4 settings. You can only save 4 setups to the Pro4.

@@tjontheroad I plan to have the K Board connected to my PC to start with so I can configure etc and control the Hydrasynth using the Bitwig software. Bitwig allows MPE external hardware control and connect via usb. I use it with my Sensel Morph and Buchla Thunder overlay. Sometimes I don't want a computer on but inevitably it always is. Nice talking to you.

Iridium isn't fully MPE compatible. That is on the feature list I've seen. Better would be ExpressiveE Osmose if they can ever get it released. I'm certainly all over that. Cheers, TJ

I can’t get mine to stay connected to the editor and any Arturia soft synths simultaneously. Is there something that needs to be set? Also can’t assign one of the sliders to the 4 presets. Help!

Hi, As it's nearly impossible to diagnose your issue from afar, I can only guess. Try using a different USB port on your computer and do not use a USB hub. Also try using a different cable. Best of luck. TJ

Finally a decent review! Is the low C key still stuck, as a MIDI note? I've heard that all isntruments shipped comes (came) with that bug, it just hung, for no reason.Not the lowest C but the 2nd octave. The missing upper C key makes it a 48 note keyboard. Not 49. I'll pass on this one.They have to iron out all the irks and quirks first.

Hi Tj 👋 How does this compare with rise 2 or expressive e?
@tjontheroad
Жыл бұрын
I've owned the Seaboard Rise 25 V1 and currently own the Osmose. These and the K-Board Pro4 (still own) are very different. Biggest differences are the feel of the"keys". The K-Board feels like key shaped drum pads. The Rise feels like squishy neoprene. The Osmose feels most like a standard keybed but has a lot more resistance, slower response and more key travel. Each has its respective strengths and weaknesses.

I much prefer the K-Board. Only disadvantages to the Roli Seaboard I can say is the lack of glide control and the internal rechargeable battery. The Seaboard has the squishy silicon playing surface that can be difficult to get used to. K-Board is more like a traditional key playing surface. Note, Roli is experiencing financial issues (Google it). Getting almost any new Roli hardware product right now is near impossible. Thanks for watching, TJ

I am very glad I bought the K board pro 4 but the lack of tutorials really make my life harder, thank you for this video it helped me a lot. I have one question- I watched the roli explanation about how to set Kontakt 6 with mpe, and in the end, they had something I can't find in the K board pro software, about how to set the range of channels. here is the video maybe you can help me find the answer, kzitem.info/news/bejne/zIaaqomkr3Shq44. The thing is that if I turn off the mpe mode in the K board software it works well with all the x-y-z dimension, but then it is working for all the notes at the same time no matter if I press it differently (if one note is on top of the glaid y then all the other notes I play also get the same effect but I want it only for one note and that the other will play without the effect I have on the y ) and it is not working for individual note, if I enable the mpe in the K board software then I can't make the expression work at all and I get only normal press like any other keyboard that is not working with mpe. do you know how to set it in the K board software?
@tjontheroad

Hi, K-Board doesn't have a MPE channel range limit parameter. You can get around this using MPE mode by setting up 15 instruments in Kontakt instead of 6 (as the video you posted describes) with channels 2-15. Channel 1 is used for global messages. Thanks for watching, TJ

Hey, random comment, but I wrote much of the final firmware for the kbp4, and saw this just tonight. If I understand correctly, you want to set the number of channels for MPE? A quick review of the kbp4 manual seems like it's a little unclear on this, but my memory is that MPE uses either channel 1 for global, or if you have a split keyboard, then channel 1 and 16 for global channels for the two zones and all the rest in-between get split between the zones. This is the setting in the editor called Midi Channel Zones. So, in the situation where you have only one 'zone', ie the whole keyboard behaves the same, then you can limit the number of channels with the Number of Channels entry box. I think, if you select 6, for instance, then channel 1 is your global, and the keys occupy channels 2-6 on a rotating basis (each trying to steal back their last channel if it's still available). Now, if you drag the zone arrow into the middle of the keyboard, you create a split zone, where the left hand of the keyboard uses some channels and the right hand uses others. I don't remember off the top of my head how the internal logic works, but if you have midi monitor or something like that up, and you fiddle with the number of channels setting, it should be obvious. I believe there was a recommendation in the MPE spec about how it should work. Like they should grow upwards or downwards from their respective global channels. (I'm just getting back into MPE for a different project and I apologize for the momentary uncertainty) But the MPE spec finalization was quite new at the time, so if there's anything I missed or doesn't seem to-spec, definitely drop me or KMI a line. I was quite pleased at the time with the outcome of programmer who designed the split-zone selection in the editor, I thought it was really flexible and intuitive. But I also forget how different it is when you haven't been reading the MPE spec with a magnifying glass for a month. And that number of channels thing sounds like it's maybe something that is important for different synths that ought to be flagged and explained better.

I tried out this keyboard really hoping to love it but I’m so frustrated -even had Sweetwater get involved in support. 1. Can it control external hardware on different midi channels? 2. Can you program a slider to change the midi channel (like 1-4)?
