Are National Parks heritage sites and how can visitors learn about history at national parks? In this video, Erin visits Kejimikujik National Park in Nova Scotia, Canada-the nation’s first park to also be designated a National Historic Site-to try to understand what makes Keji different from other parks. Chatting with Dr. Jessica DeWitt and Lis Edwards (MA student, Western University), we consider how Parks Canada approaches Indigenous history in parks like Kejimkujik.
🎬 Footage for this video was taken in August 2020 according to Covid-19 regulations & Parks Canada's rules and regulations for on site filming.

🔍 A NOTE ON METHOD
Kejimkujik is a site in Miꞌkmaꞌki, the traditional and current territory of the Mi’kmaw people. My approach to researching for this video has been influenced by my status as a settler Canadian, and I’ve included Indigenous perspectives in the way I understand to be most ethical at the time of writing. Acknowledging the immense burden on Indigenous educators to teach settlers about their history (among other expectations), I did not feel it was appropriate to expect Mi’kmaw experts to contribute their time for this project. Instead, I used readily available materials created by Mi’kmaw educators and advocates in my research for this video before inviting Mi'kmaw creators and educators to review or participate. I am very thankful to those who have contributed their time to give feedback on early drafts of this video and for their thoughtful & kind comments.
