Ronnie was very erratic in his early career, relying mostly on potting to get by. Then he got involved with Ray Reardon and started playing safety shots and learning his way around the table. After that he became a monster.
@stephenmullen7902

Disagree about relying on potting alone, he has always had great cueball control hence the 5 minute 147, making 100 breaks from the age of 10 etc. But I agree his tactical play and temperament has improved massively

Ronnie always had the safety game but he was reluctant to knuckle down properly in this area, Davis and Hendry were mature beyond their years in their 20's and did it on their own, Ronnie much more immature he's needed held from others, Reardon and Peters, so it's taken him till his late 30's to mature and get the best from himself.

One thing that's never mentioned is stance, I'm good at pool but my body doesn't let me get as low as needed to play snooker, to bend in half and tilt your head up that far for a slouched frame like mine is impossible, for a sport that's not regarded as particularly strenuous it really is for the nimble, back problems must be as prevelant to a players decline as eyesight or concentration

I'd say he was a bit absorbed by pleasing the crowd, like A.Higgins and Jimmy White before him. I've seen him lose frames because he was opting for maximums before the frame was safe! He don't do that anymore, knowing he's got nothing to prove in that department. Doherty's comment of the standard of the field is very accurate. Hendry won most of his world and other titles without serious competition, it happened before Ronnie, Higgins and Williams and this this a good luck for him. If these 4 players would be the same age and the same time - Hendry probably win one or two worlds, not more. Ronnie easily could win 10-12 titles from 1993, if played like last years. Higgins deserve 5, Williams -4 tiltes. Selby do not deserve even one World title due to his destructive playing style. Murphy deserves 2, Robertson 2 and Trump - 3 world titles, Stevens -1 title and Jimmy White - 4 titles as Alex Higins. And I think Steve Davis deserves 4 titles with all respect to him.
