Ali's decision "victory" over Norton in 1976 was one of the most disgraceful robberies in boxing history. Even Ali admitted he didn't deserve the decision after the fight, saying "He (Norton) won the fight."
@sportshistorybuff
4 жыл бұрын
Harold Lederman, one of the three "judges" who scored the fight for Ali, went to his grave a few years ago still blowing sunshine up his and Ali's ass, claiming that he and his fellow judges saw up close what the audience didn't see. How does one say this? How does one double down on their own incompetence and pro-Ali bias without a hint of shame, when ALI HIMSELF ADMITTED minutes after the fight that Norton won???? The scenery must be nice inside Ali's rear end. Four months before this robbery, Jimmy Young got hosed by a similar decision, beating a flabby Ali to the punch across 15 rounds, only to watch three ethically compromised judges hand the title back to Ali afterward. In their second fight, the ref, Tony Perez, allowed Ali to clutch and hold Joe Frazier like a cowardly octopus, without a single point deduction. Then Perez and the other two judges scored the bout for Ali by 1-2 rounds, even though Ali spent 36 minutes fighting only when he felt like it.

Norton is better than Frazier, Tunney, Dempsey & Marciano, he would have beat them too, heres why, Norton beat Ali via decision, the second fight should have been ruled a draw & the third fight which was given to Ali, Norton should have won it.. Ali said it himself. An old Norton also brought a prime Holmes the distance & some critics would say he beat Holmes too. He was weak against powerhouses like Foreman & Shavers but a great heavyweoght nonetheless

Loved Norton even after his first pro loss to JLGarcia, and it was no surprise to me when he broke Ali's jaw. Though afterwards it really was he who prepared Ali for Forman, as opposed to Ali's sparring partner Larry Holmes. Judges wouldn't give Norton the belt from Ali for the sake of boxing, both were past their best, but Norton could've easily lost the title to a Scott Ledoux or a Ron Lyle, or a half dozen other punchers, thus demeaning this legendary era of heavyweight fighting. Norton should've also won a close classic against Holmes, but they again knew Holmes would make for a greater champion. At least they gave him the Jimmy Young fight, cause Young made a career out of making them all look bad, even when he did lose. People don't realize what a phenom Norton was as a person, I knew someone who was in the marines with him, and how he'd make woman go nuts even then. Almost got him shot by a few of 'em.
