As a child of the 90s it took me a long time to get comfortable with expressing my femininity. My mom wasn't particularly girly and my dad raised my sister and I pretty gender neutrally. While I really appreciate that I was raised to value intelligence and skill-building over beauty, getting glammed up is such an instant confidence boost for me now and provides me with a creative outlet that my education or hobbies I grew up with (dirt bike riding, shooting, camping, etc.) never did!

My sister and I were obsessed with this movie growing up. We had the cat ears and a couple of the dolls. We never understood why nobody talked about it. I think what made it fail was the PG-13 rating (can't really sell it to kids when the opening song of the movie is an allegory for anal). That's why a good chunk of the home release censored it down to PG, sadly cutting some of the best jokes in the process.

My favorite experience was meeting Rosario and her agent in her trailer. Her agent and I discussed the fact that Alexandra was a witch in the comic books, and Rosario tried on my bug-eyed sunglasses while she and I talked about all of our favorite places to hang out at in Manhattan! I really liked the movie myself, and I was really proud of our dolls! I wish they’d had the opportunity to make a sequel.

The irony of ad roll Kenney being inserted right after the first talk about consumerism. Gold. Side note: Jarritos pretty good. I've only ever seen it in all the Mexican markets near me, so it's weird to be reminded that it exists outside my city. I'm pretty sure the Jamaica flavor is actually named after the country (not the company's doing; it's been a popular fresca flavor for a long time.) If anybody's curious, it's actually hibiscus flavor, which tastes kinda like floral cranberry.

One of the biggest complaints from critic after critic was an "excessive amount of product placement", which shows they wouldn't recognize a joke if it slapped them across the face. This was a sharply satirical, quite witty commentary on American pop culture and the music industry. So underrated.

I think the issue that many had at the time was that there was a strong generational clash at the Turn of the Century between 20th Century and 21s Century Feminists specifically regarding dress code wherein the Old School thought that shapeless, baggy, or somewhat masculinized clothing represented strong women who were unwilling to be objectified versus Destiny's Child and Britney Spears were 'exploiting themselves' by wearing low-riders, wearing glittery crop tops and singing songs like "Survivor" and "Stronger" which may have represented 'lip service feminism' to some. The problem was that men were trying to write to this 'New Woman' who was unafraid to be sexy and strong which is why we got confusingly sexually charged thrillers like 'The In Crowd', the fun and pretty 'Coyote Ugly', and the cool but unlikely Western, 'Bad Girls'. It seemed like the men who wrote these were trying to speak to the 'New Woman'... they just needed a f*cking translator and subtitles.

I really enjoyed this movie when I was a kid, but the only things I can remember from it now is a couple of funny scenes with Melody and the scene where Parker Posey is bragging about how tiny she is. I was 11 when this movie came out and already heavier than average, so it made me feel like garbage tbh. Now that I'm older, I have more reference points to weight and body size, and I know that whatever weight she says (like 115 pounds or something) is extremely skinny and more-or-less unobtainable except for the smallest of people, but to send that message to young girls is shitty. I know it's a product of its time, but that bit could have been cut so easily.
