Obviously, Kent was actually a Flemish colony in the British isles. hey Hilbert, wouldn't that be something fun to talk about? There were (for a short time) Flemish "colonies" in the south of Wales. Rather cool to think about, i must say. It's said that the dialect can still be found a little bit to this day.

Hey Hilbert, when/where/ was the first instance of using the word "England" to include any/all of the separate kingdoms of the main island? Was it only for the south?
@danielmalachi8793
7 жыл бұрын
It would have encompassed the four ancient kingdoms of Wessex, Mercia, East Anglia and Northumbria once King Aethelstan reconquered Northumbria from the Northmen! (Kent at this stage would have come under the political influence of Wessex) Read The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell: historical fact-fiction with a great insight into the founding of 'Engla-land', or England!
@Oodelally
2 жыл бұрын
The first instance of “England” came from King Cnut the Great (1016-1035) as it was a part of his North Sea Empire. Before that it was called the “Kingdom of the English” by Alfred the Great and the kings after him, and before that the King of England was known as the “Bretwalda” as the overlord of the English peoples. King Edred even called himself the “Emperor” of the people in Britain (I can’t remember all of them though).

Man, Northumbria is the best? Bruh, Kent in early 600s and 925-975 Wessex? Mercia in 790s? Northumbria needed Kent $$ and E.Anglian muscle. Either way the 7th century was so interesting. Edwin, Aethelfrith, Cadwollan, Aethelbert, Aethelred (The East Anglia guy) and no large viking raids.

Hengest and Horsar rebelled and a peace treaty was arranged with 400 British nobility. The Saxons each concealed a knife in his boot and massacred the British apart from Vortigern who had Hengests' daughter for a bride. This was the original night of the long knives and the British establishment desactated the site where a memorial was erected by building on it in an attempt to mask the true origins of England.
