I have a DNX890HD that I purchased in 2013 that has never given me any problems. It flaked out last week and would not turn on unless I removed and re-installed the fuse in the fuse box. I followed Michael's video here and it's working again. I did not re-install the CD player. I never use it and am hoping that by leaving it out, that it will increase the cooling fan's airflow in the unit and maybe keep it from bricking again. Thank you Michael for taking the time to show us how to fix this problem!

A big Thank You from England👍🏻 placed my circuit board in a silicone dish and put it in the air fryer for 10 minutes @ 120 degrees Centigrade. Reassembled and hey presto it worked 1st time. Add me to the pile, Michael. Just fixed this for my 80 year old neighbor. Started with diagnosing in his driveway. Ruled out backup cam, anything else external, took the unit home to my bench. Not much obvious in the power supply section. Not looking great for a repair. Headed to the youtube. Boom. Five mins with the heat gun. fixed. He was about to spend $1100 on a new unit. Sincere thanks from both of us! (When I saw in the intro video that your decks looked just like his, I knew we were gonna be good and was like SWEEET)

Thanks for making this video!!. This is an awesome fix. I have a dnx571hd that wouldn't turn on. On my first try I used a hair dryer but that didn't work. So I went and bought a heat gun, heated the sister board about 1 min per side and sure enough this did the trick.

Hey Michael, thanks a lot for this tutorial! It worked 100% for me. After I read about a diode for possible damage, it wasn't the case of my unit. Then I was sad and found this video, my motivation came back. The stange thing was, that I couldn't see any bad soldering points on this chip, but I tried it out and it worked! Merry Christmas!

This is what I did, I used a heat gun, and used a IR temp gun to measure the temp while I was heating the board/chips. I reduced heat by moving moving the heat gun away when the temp got up to 350 degs on the chips, I maintained the 350 for 30 second, the removed heat and allowed the board to cool off. And it worked the first attempt. Thanks you sir for your great post.

I replaced the daughter board because the reflow didn't work and now all features work except the Garmin navigation. It can't find the maps. It will show direction and speed but there is no detail ( roads missing). How do you update the maps? I had the card out and put it in my computer and saw the files it contained. Do you have to pay Garmin for the updates. I would be glad to do so if that will resolve the issue.

I know this is an older video, but I just had a Kenwood DNX892 die on me last Saturday. I couldn't get the heat gun method to work, I think mostly due to my own fear I was going to slag the board since my guns lowest setting is 750 degrees. I did however try putting the sister board in the oven at 350 degrees for 40 minutes as someone else in this thread said they did. It worked! My DNX892 is now working like it's brand new again. Thank you for posting this guide series, and thank you commenters for the discussion that led me to a fix! I new version of this same type unit would have cost me around $1200-1500, so thanks for the savings as well!

Wow! Thanks man! It really worked for me too! My Kenwood DNX890HD is back in business! I don't have a heat gun so I used an oven. 250F for 10 minutes was enough for the solder to heal itself. Also I find that oven method is more accurate as you can reproduce the same melting conditions compared to a heat gun when you could potentially overheat elements. Thanks again! At least $250 was saved right there!

It worked but went out again 3 months later. I just did it again at 250 degrees in the toaster oven for 12 minutes and its fixed again. If it goes out again I guess it is time for a new deck if I can't find a replacement board. Too much hassle doing this every few months and its in an older Ford truck where the dash is crumbing apart every time I pull and reinstall the deck.

I can’t believe this worked for my dnx891HD! I didn’t have a heat gun so instead I put it in my oven at 0degrees, heated it up to 427F and then took it out around cool, taking care not to jiggel it. My memory card slot broke off on my first attempt so I had to position correctly and put it back in the oven. I used a metal pan, I wish I had a wood plank since I was worried the metal would hurt the chip, but it all worked out in the end and I couldn’t be happier!

Thanks for posting this video. I fixed my DNX890HD that failed this morning. One thing I did to help me figure out the amount of time I need to heat the board was holding some solder infront of the heat gun to see how long it would take to melt to a liquid. This gave me a baseline so I didn't over do it when I was actually heating the board.

Not sure if the Summer heat is a catalyst for these issues but now I'm having the same problems on the current unit. problem kept coming back. i "fixed* it 4 times and each time it would fail. pretty sure it's a different problem. i recall seeing people having an issue with having to remove power from unit, and then it would work again. confirmed that is my problem. when it fails, just remove power and then restart and it works for a few days. now to try and see if there was a different fix for that - does not appear to be the reflow issue i thought it was.
