I read in a review book the differences between consumer and government/corporate radios is they are want stability, durability, and long term comfort ease of listening as operators were expected to use the hours of time. Modes of operation were dictated by needs of mission, so music quality was not highest priority for pros.

you are correct. Music was not was the professional radio were built for. So loudspeaker and sometime audio filters were made in order to increase the mid tone response, where the voice is. But many times using the line output and a good external speaker is all it takes to reproduce music with excellent results. A simple equalizer would help too. This is what many ships radio operators would do. or you use one receiver for the high tones, one for the middle and one for the bass. At the same time. It works! kzitem.info/news/bejne/yK9-zn6nbKGDkm0

R5000 key bounce can be repaired 100% but it does take a bit of a light touch and the correct cleaning and coating chemicals to get it 100% right. When I sold my R5000 on eBay about 5 years ago, I emphasized in the ad that the key bounce was completely eliminated along with a few power supply issues that the R5000 is known for.. I had the original Box and instruction manual.. Folks go CRAZY when you have the original box for a radio... If I recall it sold in about 24 hours at a Buy It Now price of $750.00... Still a popular radio and brings an average of $500, if the seller is reputable and has checked the radio out. OH,,, I also included a KZitem video of the radio in operation... A big selling feature that helps sell radios... As always Nick,, thanks for doing this video,,, cant wait for the SDRPlay and IC-R9500 video,,, 🙂 🙂 LOL Robert

Robert I would like your opinion. AFter watching this another Ham viewer said he thought my CW filter was choking the 28.209 signal. The 1.8khz filter sounded great. My CW filter is the standard one, 500hz. In your opinion, do you think my CW filter is potentially bad? It is a YK-88C-1

@@myradiovideos i just checked. FYI, the IF Shift knob has a detent at 12:00 which I assume means “center frequency “. So on the weak 28.209.07 beacon using the .500 filter, the IF Shift allowed me to bring in the signal perfectly. But then I wondered if this would mess up my SSB. So I went to 14.300 and it was noticeably off frequency with the same IF setting from the 28.209.07 signal. Centering the knob made 14.300 perfect. So do I have a problem? Or is this all kind of normal?

I’m watching this now and I’ve noticed that on narrow the Kenwood is suffocating that cw tone. Is the notch button out? or could be the filter is not well tuned anymore. Saying the Kenwood has no bfo is incorrect. It has the bfo but is fixed, you can’t change it. It’s fixed at 800Hz. any way ad a rule of thumb on a narrower bandwidth you should always improve the reception. In that case was sounding much better on 1.8 so something was wrong… either radio settings or the 270hz filter
@dieselten01
Жыл бұрын
I agree and I even mentioned in the video that I thought the CW filter might not be working properly. I did experiment with the notch to make sure that wasn’t the problem. If the CW filter wasn’t a solder in type, I would just buy a new filter and plug it in. But alas I would probably set the radio and/or my house on fire if I tried to solder. Thanks for confirming my thoughts!

@@dieselten01 I see you figured out how to adjust the bfo in the last part of the video on the Rohde. Keep in mind the R5000 has it set fixed at 800Hz and often times that’s the default value. If you notice when the cw note is received the Rohde lit up a red dot beneath the frequency readout. You want that dot to be the center one. Now you now your on tuned in. No matter how much you narrow down the bandwith, the signal will be right there without need for retuning the VFO. Try all those tips in future video if you want to. Another thing I wanna mention to you is that you have the WWV beacons you can easily use to check if your radios are aligned in frequency or if they need some adjustment. If you need help how to, let me know. All the best. D.

So, your comment has me motivated to find out if my CW filter is “jacked”. I just went back and ran the Ken5000 next to the Yaesu FTDX101MP on CW. I used strong CW signals on both 14mhz and 28mhz. I have determined that the Kenwood is off frequency (compared to the Yaesu) by about 30 - 35hz (.35 on the dial). But only in CW mode. When tuning down by 30hz the Kenwood CW filter brings in the signal perfectly. But then I started wondering if the radio can be off freq in CW but not in other modes. I tuned to the Maritime net at 14.300 and using the 1.8 filter I determined that the Kenwood is perfectly on frequency in USB, assuming the net operator was on frequency. But there were also several other “check ins” and all were perfect at 14.300. So can a radio be off frequency in CW but perfect in SSB?
@IZ0MTW
Жыл бұрын
@@dieselten01 The thing is in SSB is more difficult to understand if the radio is shifted by 10 or 20 Hz then it is on CW. If the reference oscillator is off frequency it’ll well appear on ssb as well as cw. Keep in mind that the error gets greater the higher you go in frequency. So to improve accuracy on measurments/adjustment I suggest you to use the higher frequency of WWV beacon that you can get. ie 15 or 20 instead of 5 for example. 30/35 Hz off for the R5000 compared to the 101 makes perfect sense. Consider that most of the hams that I hear are somehow off freq for some reason so trust only known sources, like WWV or Broadcast station to a certain degree.

I forgot in my comment also the internal filters including High and Low band-pass filters which makes a big difference in RF noisy environments such as military bases, and other government installations. The receiver won't desensitize. We had a Drake TR7 for the MARS station on my old ship between two megawatt radar stations plus HF radio antennas with signals of all different frequencies. You could not hear them, and could talk to the MARS station in the US while in Europe/Asia area no problem. That was because of internal filters. Good filters cost big bucks.

You can't compare Tie devices with a hearing test. The following parameters would be interesting: Image frequency suppression, large signal strength, selectivity, i.e. adjacent channel selection, S-meter accuracy, long-term stability such as frequency accuracy with large temperature fluctuations, etc. The test shown is purely a gimmick.
