I shift at 1700 and it goes back in the next gear at 1500, with an 18 speed with my gross weight of 102k lbs, I never run my engine under 1500 going down the road loaded. There's 1.4 million on it, still pulls like a freight train!! Pyro rarely goes past 900, the odd time it might hit 1000 but, I will not let it stay there, I'll shift down and it will drop back around 850 to 900 when pulling hard. I change oil and filters at 200 hrs not mileage.

Everyone's trashing on running high rpms because they've been brain washed by these CDL schools and mega carriers, they think performance engines are meant to be lugged like these new fuel savers, the only thing that lugging is gonna do is cause more internal vibration causing bearings to wear faster and cylinder glazing, keeping your rpms high keeps egt temps down, less carbon build up, longer engine life and when you're pulling hard keeping the rpms low will burn more fuel, your engine isnt running at its full potential down low, I pull 100k plus with lots and lots and lots of mountain driving and time and time again I prove to all the other guys that I lose fuel mileage at low rpms, the only time low rpms makes sense for fuel economy is when you're on flat ground, up to speed with a very low load on the engine, running between 1200 and 1500 rpms leaves me at 4mpg while running between 1500 and 1900 keeps me around 4.5 to 5mpg through the passes with my c15 6nz, the heavier the load and the steeper the terrain the more rpm you need, 85% of your fuel economy is load based not rpm based. Running at higher rpms with lower boost is much better than running at full load while lugging the engine, this whole bullshit rule of never going above 1500 is fucking stupid and comes from paper pushers who have never had to work on their own equipment let alone tear down an engine, theres a reason the guys in Australia pulling road trains never go below 1500rpm, both cat and Cummins in their owner and operations manuals both recommend staying between 1600 and 1900 rpms when pulling over 80k

12-1500 rpms is peak boost in mine, not at the governor...

@@sdamico1552 depends what you're pulling, im always between 1200 and 1800 on a c15, peak torque is at 1200, hp starts to drop off after 1800, engines designed to be ran up to 2100, i dont understand what it is with all these people saying oh my engine likes to be lugged lmao its like no it fucking doesn't your engine fucking hates it. you just like it cause its easier to shift at. if running up to 2000 was gonna blow your engine they wouldnt set the governor above that, as for fuel the rpm doesnt really have as big as an impact as the load on the engine.

@@Sinister_Reaper exactly. People seem to fail to understand; when running out of power no one upshifts, they always down shift. Because peak torque is not peak power.

@@justinmartin8887 yessir, people fail to understand the relationship between, torque, horsepower and rpm. As rpm and horsepower increases you're engine is able to accelerate the load and not strain as much, torque decreases as rpm and horsepower increase because the resistance on the engine is being lowered. Yeah sure you might lose .01 mpg but at least your engine isn't constantly being overworked. You'll need to do oil changes more frequently but at least your piston rings, sleeves and bearings will last a lot longer. Lugging your engine everywhere is like trying to do a 10k March with a plunger up your ass
