As a black pageant fan, it boils my blood to hear some people say that Kenya hasn't really done anything in her life. Having a USA sash on an international stage of Miss Universe as a dark skinned black American woman in the early 90s was legendary for pageantry and beauty brands worldwide. Her TV and movie experience is noteworthy as her resume is incomparable and extensive compared to her haters. Kenya was an inspiration to dark-skinned Black girls who continue to be scorned, even in Black culture. She always reminded me of a young Natalie Cole - she's become a balanced villain on RHOA in recent seasons. Honestly, the show kept her name out there and allowed her to pursue new business. I feel like without it, she would've drifted into the background as a black history trivia fact - 2000s, and 2010s were a hard time for black female musicians and actresses - I think she's evolved on TV a lot since motherhood and her appeal is shifting for sure. It definitely helps that she hasn't aged a bit - there will be lots to see from Kenya over the next decade for sure.

I wanted so badly for her to have a happy marriage to heal her childhood wounds but I saw her on Tamron Hall's show saying her ex isn't co-parenting properly and doesn't see their daughter. That's terrible for any mother but for a woman whose mother rejected her its devastating. It makes me think he's a bad person. I'm sure that Kenya's mother is. Parents like that gotta remember that the babies grow up & they remember the mistreatment. My understanding from a past Kenya interview, is that Kenya's mother's family was prominent in Detroit back then and ran a business, and Kenya's mother's sibling, had become pregnant and had a baby out of wedlock. Then another daughter became pregnant, who was Kenya's mother, Patricia. Patricia's father, Kenya's maternal grandfather, forbid any more out of wedlock children in his home. So, Kenya's paternal grandmother asked them to give Kenya to her and she raised Kenya. In the early 1970's unwed teenage pregnancies were considered an embarrassment to the family.

Love this. Kenya is such an inspiration I think especially to dark skinned black girls globally ✨. It's heartbreaking what she went through with her mother's rejection, but it strengthened her at the same time. By the way, I love the background song. What is it called?

Kenya's haircare line is not just for women of color. Per Kenya, her haircare line is for all hair types and all ethnicities. It just does not work well on greasy hair.

I agree with you on the fact that being on reality tv might have tarnished her image a little. I personally didn't know much about her until watching your video. I know not everyone wants to be an inspiration/role model but her story, is a story of resiliance and strength. Her upbringing is one that is too common in underpriviledged communities. It is a story that would resonate with so many people. I hope if she does reality tv again it focuses on her philanthropy and all the good she does in the world. Happy Birthday to this beautiful woman!

Some of these things I did not know. But I must say she has definitely made a name for herself. It's sad that her mother was so awful to her. Kudos to her for showing the world that she isn't just another pretty face.

Not every women who can have a baby is meant to be a mother. And I think that’s the case with Kenya’s mother. She was probably forced to have the baby. I see why Kenya was ms USA she’s really gorgeous.

Thank you for doing this segment. I don't watch housewives but I've always thought Kenya was a beautiful woman. I liked everything you said as far as her accomplishments being over shadowed by the nonsense of the housewives show. I am now a not a fan but a cheerleader for Kenya and all women. May we all continue to grow and be amazing regardless how rough the road we travel is💯💜.

Correction: You confused Miss USA with Miss America. Kenya is the second African American woman to win Miss USA after Carole Gist (who also happened to be from Michigan l) won the title in 1990.
