On August 9, 2022, Kenyans will cast their ballots for a new president, members of parliament, and members of the Kenyan senate. The presidential race features 4 candidates with the leading contenders being Hon Raila Odinga, former prime minister contesting under the Azimio la Umoja coalition movement, and Kenya's incumbent deputy president, Hon William Ruto, leader of the Kenya Kwanza Coalition.
Kenyan elections have always tended to be dramatic, but the country has nevertheless remained a pole of stability and democracy in the region. This year’s elections will be tightly fought, and are taking place against a backdrop of international turmoil, economic difficulty and regional tensions. The Covid pandemic, the Ukraine crisis and global inflation are all squeezing public finances, business opportunities and living standards. It is the domestic impact of these pressures on ordinary Kenyans that will play into how people vote.
Hosted by the Royal Africa Society and in partnership with GBS Africa and Eastern Africa Association, this event will provide insights to some of the factors that will impact the outcome of the elections, and how this will affect Kenya’s future and the prospects of the region. It will be of direct interest to international media, UK Corporates, civil society and developmental organisations, and all who care about Kenya.
