There's also a huge library of tens of thousands of books and periodicals. What's on display is just the tip of the iceberg. I used to work and teach there: I loved demonstrating the optical toys. A piece of the Cinematographe fell off when I was cranking it for some students once, but don't ever tell anyone... In my defence, I fixed that mutoscope (the what-the-butler-saw machine) with a paper clip (this was around 1999?), and it looks like it's still working just fine.

I love this place and all others like it. It combines two of my great loves - cinema and history. Bliss.

You should check out the Studio Ghibli museum if you're ever in the Tokyo area. Some educational stuff about how animation works, lots of early work and history of the studio.

The national museum of cinema in Turin, Italy is fantastic, worth a trip to Turin for the museum alone. History of cinema, all set in 5 levels inside the Mole tower. It even has a working glass panoramic elevator that bursts through the roof

This makes me so annoyed now as I visited Exeter Uni for an open day but ran out of time to have a look in the museum

Yay! shout out for the national media museum. Though they did recently rename it to National science and media museum. Who cares though. Bradford has a rich history of film, and it's a damn shame more people don't know that.

Visited this archive while studying film at Falmouth College of Arts back in 2002. Being that Exeter is only a few miles away from me, I must revisit again. Thank you Mark Kermode for bringing it to the attention of others. It sure is a gem.
