The truth is there's almost certainly worse films than fifty shades darker, transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean. Some low budget badly directed badly acted badly written rubbish. Unless Kermode trawls the depths of film releases his list will always be considered misguided. So what should he do? Make a list of films that he feels disappointed by or were bad to watch. And Covenant is a bad film. The plotting is terrible, the script just lazy, Ridley can't build tension at all, the subtext smacks you around the face with self importance while being incredibly cringeworthy... I could go on and on about how bad that film is. But I'll let Ridley prove it for me. The character backstory can be found in a trailer on KZitem and not in the actual film. And to make matters worse like Kermode says he starts messing with Alien. It 100% deserves to be in the top ten and personally I'd have it much higher up.

Well he has a film coming out hopefully this year called Radegund, which will apparently be a straight-up three-act film rather than a meditative piece. It depicts the life of Franz Jagerstatter, who refused to fight for the Nazis during World War II because he saw them for the evil bastards they were. As a result, he was arrested and killed. But since Jagerstatter was a devout Catholic, he was declared a martyr by the Church decades after his death. I bet Jagerstatter's faith will play a big part of the film, because Malick has explored Catholic spirituality a lot in his films, particularly The Tree Of Life and To The Wonder.

I didn't see enough movies this year (47) to really have a top ten worst list but my trinity of wild mediocrity at best would certainly consist of Justice League, The Mummy and Geostorm in descending order. By contrast, Alien: Covenant is almost top ten of the year material for me, certainly the most aggressively under appreciated film alongside Valerian. Three watches later and it continues to grow, hey ho.

The only one of those I saw was Kingsman, I gave all the rest (and several other movies this year) a very wide miss, so I can't really comment on the substance. That said, I didn't think Kingsman was quite as bad as Mark paints it (Elton was awful and Julianne Moore took the piss out of herself just a bit TOO much) and the sequence that had most people up in arms was crass and tasteless but I thought it sort of worked...

Biggest disappointment/moat disliked film - The post-modernist deconstruction of popular cinematic expectations, in an attempt to do something arty whilst wiping the slate clean for Disney to have free reign over a played out universe: It's Star Wars, The Last Jedi.Thought you'd be able to watch the new trilogy back to back some day? - Well, you can't, because every thematic plot piece set up from Episode 7 is gleefully inverted and handed back to the audience in Episode 8, with a "What, you really thought That was going to be a Thing!?".... "but, but, you spent so much time setting it up in the previous film!?"It's Star Wars, Episode 8. Deconstructed, reconstructed and rehashed, but not how you'd expect.

Rather hard for a general audience to have a worst top 10, as we don't have to see things like 'Emoji Movie'. Why is Terrence Malick just hiring good actors and meandering around Austin with Emmanuel Lubezki? What a complete waste. His films used to be ABOUT SOMETHING, but, my god, Knight of Cups and Song to Song feel like beautifully shot film student projects. He has become a parody of himself.
