This song really reminds me of the naivety of nostalgia. The comfortable memories of childhood and how the lines blur between reality and fiction, how sleep means you don’t have to process emotions and gives you that bit of comfort your childhood brought you. Until it doesn’t, and maybe it was easier when you were a kid because you didn’t know what was real or fake. You miss the feeling, how unreal it all felt until you wake up one day and you’re in the drivers seat of your own life. And for me personally I love the happy music to go with the lyrics. It truly puts me in the mindset of direct childhood trauma but how your grasp on it as a child is tenuous at best, and yet none of it feels real. The comfort of escapism during your formative years can feel like freedom in a box.

this song is the most dreamcore/weird core song I’ve ever heard. I love it. I can not imagine living without this song. So nostalgic, Literally. I love this song more than anything at this point. I’ve known and listened to this song for 5-6 years. I couldn’t get enough of it. The melody and lyrics are just so good. Better than anything Kero Kero Bonito is one of the best bands in the whole universe to me. Thank you for this amazing bring-back childhood memory song. I’d die without this song. Whenever I listen to this song my brain immediately signals me so much childhood memories. My brain and heart fell in love as soon as I heard this song. If you don’t like this song, there is something genuinely wrong with you. I respect people’s opinions but on this I am going to fully attack anyone who hates this song (by words). If this song dies then I’ll bring it back with my heart. I listen to this song everyday. Even kero kero bonitos other songs are just like this. Amazing, perfect and nostalgic. Even though weirdcore and dreamcore isn’t my style. This song will make it my style. I love this song as much as I love my family, friends and my cat. Which is bigger than the universe. Thank you, thank for making this song.

(Example, a 12 yo going to the mall and buying makeup). Another video by @Stagehands Inn, about the end of PBS Kids cable tv channel (that I grown up watching). My messages to you is that you don't lose hope in your childhood! You are not alone in a zoom classroom and you are NOT too old to play with dolls, imagination, swing in the rain, and just have fun as a kid with kids! Also be careful with the internet (no more skipidy toilet). AND highschool movies are not the same as highschool, it's close to what school is like in middle school (if you're in the US).

If you listen to the lyrics this song is actually about a pretty serious subject despite it's tune. The singer is growing and as she gets older she gets tired of life. She isn't aware of the change and questions why things can't be the way that they were when she was a kid. She used to have enthusiasm and want to stay up late but now she's tired all of the time and would rather be asleep. It could be interpreted differently, but this is what I got from it.

i feel i've been caught up into something i call "era/year regression" since a very long time. i want to be born in 2000 for some reason and want to stay in the range of 2000-2012. forever. even though i was born in that range. and this 'regression' has altered my preferences a lot. i like outdated academic books (probably like from 2003-08) a lot than the ones published last month, songs i listen to are usually nearly a decade old or more, i got a digital camera from 2008 which i still use for clicking random stuff, and have its timestamp at the year 2008. the flash in my display picture is actually from the same camera. songs which sound like they were made in the 00s or 10s also feel comforting, like this one. i hate new technology, and want a phone which is similar to nokia or blackberry. preferably blackberry. and i like the cassettes which are no longer used. the stories i write (yes i do) are NEVER set beyond 2013, mostly involuntarily and sometimes voluntarily. i never prefer novels written after 2000. and it's not something for an aesthetic, even though it feels to me. this is not harmful to the society, but it is very hard to achieve for my own satisfaction; when people suggest me to get a phone to click pics, even if i tag along with that camera, and to get used to new things. i hate it, mostly. edit 1: so there have been some developments. i found out my kid watch which i thought i had lost long ago in 2013 or such. it’s just like it was then: blue straps, Madagascar 3 exclusive edition analog kid watch. it is frozen at 12:02. idk what i would be doing the time it stopped. ill get it repaired, but maybe not wear it. or i may. idk. it still fits me. and i also discovered many games i used to play way way WAY back which still survive on the play store. now i play them instead of writing my stories because they haven’t changed a bit. ah… i’d really like to live in 2000-12.

As a kid we romanticize growing up, falling in love, going to high school. As an adult we romanticize being a kid, having less worries and responsibilities. In reality, the best moment is the one you have right now. This is the moment you can change; the one you can choose to enjoy or work to make better. Dreams are great, as are aspirations, but don’t forget to enjoy the journey dear friends :) (Edit, a year later) Things got a bit serious in the replies and I wish to clarify this is generalized advice that may not apply to everyone’s life scenario. I am sorry to those of you who have had a difficult past or even present, and wish to tell you that things will get better. I am by no means a professional therapist or motivational speaker, but my heart goes out to you, and I hope a little piece of joy comes into your life today.

The song makes me feel so safe yet unnerving at the same time, I guess because Im getting older. Not that Im that old I'm just 20 but listening to this song reminds me of the days where I didn't know responsibilities, I can play video games whenever I want, I didn't know how to fall in love. Just me being an Innocent child, Although I never wanna go back to my past young life because I love what I have now, I guess it just scares me that the hardest part of my life is coming and Im either strong enough to take it or I'm too weak to handle it all.

My personal interpretation: - Note that, along with the song's title and the line "Just to be a kid again", another line is also repeated throughout the chorus: "Now I know what's real what's fake". -- In my opinion, this holds great importance in the song's theme: the contrasting "real" and "fake" can be referring to "practical" - symbolizing the more realistic life as an adult, and "imaginary" - symbolizing the more ethereal life as a kid. -- This essentially means that, as the singer grows up, they learn to be practical while slowly lose grasp on their own creativity. - Four of the lines in the song can be interpreted differently with this logic: -- "Trees used to talk to me" refers to the singer's imaginations in their youth. Personifying inanimate objects occurs often in children when they play with their toys or "imaginary friends". -- "Are we from outer space" can be a question the singer's childish self is asking. They are questioning why the practical world feels so alien after growing up. "Outer space" can be referring to the imaginations since it is generally appealing to many children. (Every kid once wanted to be an astronaut...) -- "Just to be a kid again" refers to being able to imagine again. -- "Rather sleep than keep awake" refers to dreaming, entering a world created in your own mind, rather than facing reality. Remember, I am not trying to disprove any other theories as being wrong, and this is just my personal opinions. Thank you for reading because this comment miiiight be a bit long and very confusing.

To be honest, childhood wasn’t what we crack it up to be. We remember and obsess over the best parts, and it only seems perfect because our current standards and capacity for hardship have changed. We lament a time where our worst problems would be falling over or losing games, but we forget that at the time, since that was our world, it hurt just as much as the difficulties of adult life. It’s nice to imagine there was a perfect world we could return to, but there never really was one, and you can only live in the present and move forward, and do the best to be kind to yourself and respect your inner child. Try to appreciate the priveliges you only now have, such as freedom to live your life, no matter how insignificant, and a proper understanding of the world. Life seems a whole lot better when you stop comparing it to something unobtainable.

It hits different if you think of "Now I know what's real what's fake, Rather sleep than stay awake." like she just learned what the truth actually is, and it hurts so bad that she just wants to pretend she still doesn't know it like she used to, so it would be less painful. And with the fact that now she has learned it, there is no turning back; it will always stay at some place in her mind that all of it is a lie. That's what hurts her the most.
