I was thinking about this comparison people are making. While I understand, in the abstract, the responses that people have and, perhaps, the changed attitudes that we now have, in terms of empowering athletes, this episode [with Strug] seems markedly different in that she was faced with the prospect of one exercise in one event, with seconds of [extremely brutal] pain, prior to hopefully getting some painkillers and treatment. Simone had a whole competition ahead of her; a lot more time to feel and strain under the pressure. Also, I think Simone Biles had a little more time to deliberate.

Except they didn't know that until AFTER her second vault, as the russians performed one more time after. Her second vault cinched the mathematical win - no matter what happened or how the final Russian floor routine went, the americans were getting gold. Had she only done her first vault, it was still possible for them to lose.
@kendramillard564
2 жыл бұрын
as @@erin9868 rightly put it, this couldnt be known beforehand, because there was one more russian jump after her. In the words of wikipedia "Retrospectively, after a poor performance from the final Russian Roza Galieva on floor, Moceanu's score (9.200) would have been sufficient to beat the Russians even if Strug had not performed a second vault, as the lowest score for each team was dropped. However, Galieva performed after Strug, and therefore Strug needed to land a second vault on her feet in order to mathematically clinch the gold. "

I remember watching this as a kid on tv , so amazing so inspiring. One of the best moments in Olympic history.
wow reading the comments its clear that people think she did this because SHE wanted to but in reality she didn't have any other choice...her coach, Károlyi insisted to do it again...watch the documentary Athlete A and it will change the way how you watch this clip...

This clip from Athlete A was told from a different woman's point of view, who wasn't even there. Her main focus was the doctor that was sexually abusing people.

I remember watching this live, oh my god how inspiring the olympics used to be. These people were not just athletes but entertainers heroes and role models. I don't know what happened,same thing that happened with music and everything else, but something changed and now its uninspired and there is no spirit, taken for granted and routines are done more like a job without pushing limits or showing off skill just calculated for score and medal. Being an olympic champion meant heroic human spirit and pushing limits and showing the rest of the world what us humans are capable of. Kerry Strug, Dominic Moceanu, Andreea Raducan, and Alexei Nemov were my childhood heroes.

Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas and Aly are uninspiring? Even coming through ears of sexual assault from their ‘doctor’ and coming through it like champs? They’ve changed the sport of gymnastics forever, including the expectation that women have to be waifs to compete and be the best. I disagree completely!

The US was willing to injure a child for a victory. She won the gold but was never able to do gymnastics again because of her injury. She didn't have a choice, she didn’t break her ankle, she ruptured a ligament in her ankle and damaged a tendon in it: even worse than a break. Go watch the new Netflix documentary called "Athlete A" because this moment was mentioned. Truly sad and disgusting how they abused those girls

Jenna Poole I’d rather listen to KERI who is on record stating had she not vaulted again it would have haunted her for giving up, she made the choice to go again no one else as it was a split second decision. Give the athlete some credit for making her own choice to vault again vs making it appear she was just a sheep. Secondly her ankle healed in just weeks, she did an entire gymnastics tour all year after Atlanta where she tumbled and flipped without issues so i don’t know where you are getting this idea that her ankle injury destroyed her physical abilities to ever tumble again. Lastly she had planned to retire after 96, she did not want to compete as an elite and never had plans to continue a competitive career in gymnastics so the ankle was not the reason she retired.

@@muckyou1490 Very well said. If it had been 4years earlier in Barcelona I believe it would have been Bela or Nuno's (who was the assistant coach) job to stop her from doing the second vault or at least discussed with her trying to protect her from more injury. but by this time she was eighteen and should have more of a say in what she could or could not do

Apparently she didn't have to vault again according to the score having the US in the lead that was insurmountable for any other nation to take over. Her coach was selfish and pushed her knowing she was hurt. She was only 18 and she retired from a sport she loved because of this injury that was avoidable. I stand with Simone.

She had the rest of her life to recover. She made million s in endorsement s because of this brave act. She is a personal hero to countless American s. @@johan8969 of course it is her proudest moment, the poor kids career was literally destroyed at that moment. Psychologically she can't look at that point and say she wishes she didn't do it, ever. @@Jennymlnd Where do you get the idea that she was bullied or manipulated? She wanted to do it, she did it, and it is her proudest moment. She has the mentality of an Oplympian champion and that include not letting herself of her team dowm. She is a winner and wanted to win.
