When ketamine is used for depression and other psychiatric conditions, it is usually given as an intravenous infusion, which is an off-label treatment in the US. But in 2019, the FDA approved the first ketamine-related treatment, called Spravato, an intranasal preparation of S-ketamine.
Although the only approved ketamine-related treatment is intranasal S-ketamine, a lot of research suggests R-ketamine may be superior or at least that the racemate (containing both S- and R-ketamine) could be optimal.
