My final 2 days here in Ketchikan, Alaska…
First up was a 9:30am reservation at the very popular Lumberjack Show. They offer 3 - 5 shows daily that are 1 hour in length.
For my visit in a Saturday, they had available shows at 9:30am (which I booked), 11:45am and 2:15pm.
And interestingly, it was inside the Gift Shop at this Lumberjack Show where I discovered a lot of cool souvenirs to buy. But, if you are looking for little knickknacks and keepsakes, you’ll find them all over downtown Ketchikan!
Btw, it is $40 per person entry for the 1 hour show. In my opinion, that’s really steep. But…when you’re cruising or coming to a remote place like Ketchikan, I guess you have to pay up for activities, foods, sights and tours.
Getting back to the Lumberjack Show, they allowed me into the show 30 minutes ahead of time. I got my seat underneath an awning just in case it started raining. But for the most part, most visitors at this Lumberjack Show are afforded covering from the elements. It’s only maybe the 1st row of the bleach style stands (with seat backs) where you could possibly get wet.
The show featured 2 lumberjacks from the USA and 2 lumberjacks from Canada and they competed against each other in all styles of events with a cute girl narrating the action and keeping guests entertained with her sense of humor.
For the most part, the Lumberjack Show was entertaining and the audience was loud and actively contributing to the positive energy.
Once the show concluded, they offered a photo to take with all 4 lumberjacks and the narrator for a terrific family and memorable moment.
All you have to do is wait in line for this. I did it and the line went quickly. I asked a stranger to take my photo which she happily did.
So having a picture moment to end the show was definitely worthwhile!!
The following morning, my last day in Ketchikan,I woke up early and made a quick pitstop in town to capture a quick glimpse at the surroundings during off peak hours.
It was a real moment to admire what makes towns of the Inside Passage so special.
There are colorful storefronts and charming walkways to appreciate being in the “Last Frontier” state.
I then drove 17 miles from town and wanted to do an early hike at Dude Mountain Trail.
But…the roadway up towards the trailhead was pretty dangerous for my rental car.
Not only was the road one-way, very narrow and along a steep incline, but there were some unpacked parts to it as well.
And being an experienced traveler who has had many mishaps and accidents, I now know my limits.
Unfortunately I never took the rental car up to the trailhead. I couldn’t risk it, especially because there was absolutely no one around!
And for my last day in Ketchikan, I’d just rather play it safe and hang around downtown.
Finally, I walked Married Man’s Trail right near the Creek Street section of Ketchikan.
A lot folks here were searching for salmon swimming upstream but I didn’t bother to look.
Married Man’s Trail is maybe 1/4 of a mile long on a boardwalk path but it is a quiet setting in the forest with the running stream as the centerpiece of it all.
I then walked around the downtown area for one last time soaking up the surroundings of Ketchikan before it was time to depart on the ferry to the airport and then the airport back to Seattle.
I did notice what I believe was the Deadliest Catch boat from the TV show. It was docked in the harbor. It’s called (I believe) the Aleutian Ballad. If that’s the name, then it was here. And I’m pretty certain you can take tours on it going fishing and getting real life experience for $229 per person.
For me, I’m not big into fishing so I passed on the tour.
Finally, I refilled the gas tank to my rental car and boarded the dairy to cross the waters and return to the airport.
I boarded a 4pm flight with Alaska Airlines back to Seattle.
The flight time was 1 hour and 48 minutes.
I chose Seat 10A which was a step up from Basic Economy Class.
And…of all the seats on the plane, this 10A had no window!! So…I was quite depressed not being able to film the takeoff and landing if the flight (which are my favorite parts).
I did complain to Alaska Airlines the following day about not warning me that 10A didn’t have a window view and they rewarded me with a $75 voucher for future travel. That was nice of them.
Overall, my 3 night and 4 day trip to Ketchikan, Alaska was a fulfilling extended weekend getaway for me.
I’m glad I returned to Alaska for the 3rd time and for a chance to experience more of what the famed Inside Passage of Southeastern Alaska is like.
Thanks everyone for coming on this ride me and catch ya all in 2 weeks for Pago Pago and American Samoa in the South Pacific Ocean!
