My husband is a veteran suffering from severe PTSD, anxiety, depression, etc. and we are doing tons of research on how ketones and a ketogenic diet can help him. I’m also on Keto to help with PCOS. (I’m down 15 lbs in 4 weeks!) I was listening to this video just now and my husband actually walked by and asked me to turn up the video when you started talking about glutamate and calming the brain. Could you do more videos on this? Maybe specific types of Keto-friendly foods that boost the positive impacts on brain health. Thank you! 💪🏼✌🏼

Was your husband subjected to any TBIs while serving? If so, the PTSD may very well be a physical problem in the brain rather than psychological. If the answer is yes, and he hasn't had this done already, I would have his hormone levels checked. The hypothalamus and pituitary both lay in the brain and can both be damaged and compromised during a TBI. Both of these organs deal with almost all major hormones in the body. If this is the case, I can find the name if the endocrinologist that performed these studies. Please let me know.

I have PTSD and a TBI and the keto diet has allowed me to completely come off of my medications for the past 3 months. My wife, who experienced some of my worst episodes and months of deterioration, has said often that this diet has an even better effect than the medication from the VA. My psychiatrist is supportive and my doctor is skeptical but after losing 40+ pounds with good blood test results, he can't really argue against it. I feel like a completely different person in my brain. I can finally sleep, I think more clearly, my anger issues are under control, and my depression is much easier to deal with. I haven't had an episode or nightmare at any point during the diet, either.

I feel that and as I grew up I realised that It wasn't something everyone could feel. I go through periods when it's extreme like you mention and I feel so bad around people I feel I have to get away. Even run to the bathroom type feeling lol. I experienced that when meeting a beautiful girl once for drinks. I told myself to man up and stop being nervous. It was my gut telling me to get away......but my other organs disagreed .....I nearly ended up permanently on medication to help recover from my experience with her. Anyway you want to get that feeling back you need to do what you know is right. The things you are procrastinating over. The things that are uncomfortable. When you're headed in the right direction you will start to see a glow around people and objects and unfortunately you will be more horrified by the boundless cruelty of the "world" but remember you live in YOUR world. No point trying to get involved in the world the news shows you cos it will just drag you down and there's little you can do to change it

I am posting this message to all of my fave (legit) keto “gurus,” in hopes more of you will address the extreme psychological shift required to transition to a clean keto and IF or OMAD lifestyle. After decades of battling obesity and food addiction, making food the center of my universe, I now face a conundrum. I am finally free from hunger and cravings, which is wonderful. Food is no longer a source of gluttonous pleasure, but rather a simple source of nutrition and fuel. I imagine this is how slim, healthy people habitually feel. I intellectually get how this is a sign of health, yet I experience this huge context shift with a sense of emotional emptiness. 8 weeks in, I wonder if I am going through a psychological withdrawal, similar to a drug addict who gets clean, or an alcoholic gets sober - no more rollercoaster highs and lows. I’ve heard it can take many months an alcoholic to reset their physiology and neurochemistry after getting sober. Are the mechanisms similar for sugar and carb addicts?

Love the science, thank you! This more efficient production and use of cells sounds strangly like one of my favorite topics: epi-genetics. Where the mind can change gene expression...it's not just that stress /cortisol create fat but the emotions behind it all also play a major, if less "obviously vocal" part of changing the physiology. I know this is a fitness site but I just have to mention the emotional and epi-genetics component when you talk about changing gene expression. What an incredible gift from it's creator that our body is and thanks for your support of yours and also for the benefit of others.

On page 36 of Dr. Sarah Myhill’s book called Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Myalgic Encephalitis - it’s mitochondria, not hypochondria copyright 2017, she explains “ a fascinating aspect of energy delivery in the brain has to do with fuel supply. “. “Silvia Raveraa (2009) showed that there were not enough mitochondria in the brain to explain the energy it uses. Essentially, the fatty myelin sheaths which wrap themselves around nerve fibers like a ‘Swiss roll’ have adopted mitochondrial biochemistry.15. This makes great sense: it means that energy production is in close proximity to energy demand. However, the Swiss rolls like to burn fats in the form of ketones as a fuel supply. Ketones are very dense in energy and easy to move around fatty areas - 60 % of the brain is composed of fat. /it needs modest amounts of long-chain fats to build the Swiss roll membrane to deliver energy, but the fuel comes largely from medium-chain fats- saturated animal fats like lard, drippings and butter; also coconut oil and chocolate fat. Low fat diets are also a major risk factor for CFS. Incidentally, they are also a risk factor for dementia, cancer and heart disease”

REALLY good video, Thomas. Love the studies you've cited. Having once been free-roaming blue-green bacteria (spirochetes), today's mitochondrion organelle reproduces by means of binary fission. Numbers increase in neurons from ketones, and in muscles, from aerobic exercise. Size of mitochondria in muscles increases from strength exercises like weight-lifting. Number versus size is the primary difference between fast and slow-twitch muscle fibers.

I am so on board with the Keto lifestyle it has changed my life for the better. I have lost 55 pounds since March and feel like a teen again. I have two different kind of questions for my family. Who doesn’t have weight problems. 1. My wife is the complete opposite of me she can eat and process sugar and carbs all day like nothing . She weighs about 107 pounds and she is trying to weigh around 125 and nothing seems to work. So I am hesitant to switch her to keeto specially since meat doesn’t sit well with her other then fish. We have tried twice to switch her to a low carb and high fat lifestyle but she gets so week trying to go without carbs. However, the times we did try her depression and anxiety was undeniably better. This is something that nothing has ever helped. So we are desperately trying to make this work. Do you have any suggestions how an underweight person can start this and move in the right direction? 2. Congratulations on the baby!(I know I’m late) We also had a baby who is now 6 months old. I am wondering what has your research shown for young ones? We just started giving blended avocado with water. As well sweet potato mixed with water. I’m not sure how to feel about the potatoes. Any recommendations on what is the best approach? Thank you so much! I can honestly say your videos have made a life change effect on my family’s lives. Have a great day

Thanks for sharing this. I'm very interested in the physiological psychology of ketosis. I've speculated as to whether better brain function may be a result of the increased lipid intake. My thinking is that it takes fats to build the myelin sheathing that surrounds the axon of a neuron. I've thought that maybe this lessens misfires between neurons because of better insulation. I may be totally off on this but perhaps it is something to consider.

I once saw an experiment, where a group of people went to greenland. The scientists knew that the population there were using fat as fuel, and not carbs, and they had a theory, that is was because the people on greenland were moving all day long, and almost never sat still. They didnt talk about the diet as far as I remember, that wasnt what the experiment was about anyway. So the group lived with the people, and did the things they did, but the stupid thing about it was, that they had their own food with them. They ate biscuits, bread and other carby foods, while the people there of course ate meat. When they went home, the scientists examined the group to see if they were also burning fat now, but of course they werent, so they concluded that people from other parts of the world, had lost the ability to use fat as fuel, and that it was only the people on greenland that could do that. Even then, over 10 years ago, I thought it was SO stupid, because even I could see that of course they were burning carbs, because they still ate them, when the people didnt. But today I know they did it intentionally, because they wanted people to think they had to eat carbs, and that there was nothing to do to get healthy.

I eat 4 scrambled eggs with 2 slices of brown bread immediately after. Should I separate the time between them since eggs have fats and will be stored as fat in the body because of the carbs from the breads being eaten at the same time. Thanks

Could you do a video on lactates as a fuel for the brain. How do lactates fit in with other brain fuels?

My brain was really foggy, at times I don't think I should have been driving. I was over a month into ketosis so it wasn't the keto flu. I'm curious what I was lacking to cause that response?

1. consume enough electrolytes 2. eat enough, don´t make a chronic caloric deficit, it will mess your hormones 3. wait 3 months on strict keto

Nice video! I'm still not entirely sold on the ketogenic diet though. I've read that you'll eventually need carbs to have good testosterone levels because removing or having low carbs will diminish testosterone. Can you make a video on this? Would be very helpful

I’m down 20 lbs in 5-6 weeks and I have yet to have mental clarity, I also keep fucking something up because I am back on the keto flu for the 3rd day... it’s hell. I’ve been fluctuating between 168 lbs to 172 and always constipated. I eat less than 20g carbs a day and I don’t eat sugary things... I have had these “keto” cookies to give me a sweet tooth help using Estevia or whatever but why can’t I get down anymore?

What does keto diet does to our arteries and out heart? I would like to try it but eating lots of bacon and meats seems dangerous.

I eat 1 bacon per day, 1/4 lb meat, and 1 egg on keto. You're not supposed to eat more meat. More oils and fat yes.

Extra protein gets turned into glucose by the liver which kicks you out of ketosis. “Lots of meat” is not Keto.

@@blisterbill8477 misinformed thats gluconeogenesis. and it wont kick you out of keto. aslong as you dont go past 20-50g net carbs (stay under 20, its easy) your BODY WILL stay in ketosis.

Any idea why taking 5-HTP makes my head feel "fuzzy" like I'm out of keto? Scientific studies show it affects the hippocampus and you mentioned that keto more or less changes the way the hippocampus "runs" so does it have something to do with that?

Can anyone help me with my keto conundrum? I haven't started keto only because I can't figure out how to make the math work. Do you really have to eat a proportion of 2/3 fat to 1/3 protein (66% fat, 33% protein)? Because I've done the math and it seems impossible on that ratio. Eggs and all meats have more protein than fat. 1 beef steak at 300 g would have 78 g protein to 57 g fat. That's 58% protein to 42% fat. To change that to 66/33, I'd also have to eat 1.25 cups of shredded coconut every time I eat a steak. At 3 meals a day, 3.75 cups of coconut every day is realistically way too much. Slightly less fat in avocados, which taste awful imo. Is there another pure fat source I don't know about? OR is this 2/1 ratio maybe inaccurate?
