Atkins was waaaay ahead of his time, and revolutionary at a time where the fatpanic was at its highest. His dietplan and procedures in his book actually went very much along the keto line that you see today - (if you remember to consider the time it was written in) - which makes me believe that most of the keto people talking negative about Atkins has never actually read his book. Unfortunately a lot of people also misunderstood the diet or went on it without reading his book, and so thought it meant they could just eat all the bacon and cheese they wanted, which was not what he advocated.

TheAnnestube very true. I had never read a Atkins book, but after discovering keto, read the ‘New Atkins’ from Phinney/Westman which is so close to a ketogenic diet. I like what these two are doing with slightly higher carbs.

Atkins is a ketogenic diet. I don't understand why people are arguing about this. Ketogenic is not a brand name, it's a bio chemistry term with a definition which the Atkins diet fits.

Late to the video but thank you for giving Dr. Atkins his flowers. I recognize that some of his ideas have had to be modified due to new research (like every diet should) but I don't think people realize the uphill battle of telling people in the 70's to restrict carbs which at the time were being heavily pushed by the exploding commercial food industry. I do tend to lean more towards Keto now but 40 years ago it would have been essentially impossible. I think people forget that you couldn't walk into a store and get a fresh avocado much less avocado oil. I'm sure we all remember those MCT oil adds in the 80's lol.

The Atkins diet was the HOTTEST diet in late 90's early 2000's, and Dr Atkins put out the book "The NEW diet revolution" where he revised some earlier thoughts and introduced the concept of "net carbs", carbs that don't spike insulin as much (glycemic load) and thus don't knock you out of ketosis. So it's not like he was shunned at the end, and you wouldn't have Keto today without him, quite frankly.

In Atkins only the first 14 days called induction you need to be strict and you could still eat celery and salad and oils were almost the same and only after induction nuts could be introduced and low carb veggies and once you reached your ideal weight you could add some healthy carbs and yes one cannot overeat on protein diet and he talks about doing urine test too , I have done it and it is very good and even wine is allowed after 14 days but just once a week I Find keto easy to do as it is not as rigid as Atkins but both have so much similarity
@teceyS3

NO. The induction phase is 20g of carbohydrates per day, from the list of vegetables that he listed in his books- and you could go 14 to 30 days on induction if you wanted to, or you could stay on it longer, depending on what your results were. The difference between Atkins and keto is Atkins is low carb, high protein, moderate fat; whereas, keto is low carb, moderate protein, high fat ;)

I tried keto and it was effective, but two issues I had were eating insane amounts of fat, at first to the point of almost nauseam, never felt right or sane. Second is it's incredibly difficult to maintain longterm for the average person. Atkins provides a more achievable longterm approach while attacking the main problem. Achieving health is a marathon not a sprint...I believe Atkins is the diet to get one there over the long term.

I am currently reading the induction section of a book titled “Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution”. It was published in 2002. One of the rules of induction is that nuts and seeds are not allowed. On page 133 of the book there is an example menu of an induction breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The sample induction dinner is 9 oz of broiled salmon, kale topped with garlic, lemon and sesame seeds. Question: Why are sesame seeds included in the sample dinner if nuts and seeds are not allowed during induction?

I stopped watching this when I saw all the miss information about Atkins. In the introductory period of Atkins you are to have 18 - 22 g of carbs per day with much of that coming from vegetables. No diet in the world would recommend 0 carbs - it's impossible! Vegetables and foods are restricted to a specific low carb list for this period. There is a reason for this. Many people are sensitive to certain carbs and these spike their blood sugar and/or cause cravings or weight gain. These higher carb vegetables and foods are added in one at a time slowly to see how your body reacts to them and if you tolerate them. Similar to when they put you on the increasing diet to find if you have a food allergy. You do track calories related to your height and gender (for me that 1500 - 1800 per day). You track your protein, fat, carbs, calories and fiber, plus water and exercise. They encourage you to eat fresh and clean, but acknowledge that for various reasons some don't and make allowances for that. They have their foods that they offer, but you don't need to buy their food nor do they push it on you. Their online tools and information has made this the easiest of all the diets I've ever tried, and I'm still in the most restrictive introductory phase. After only one week, I've been able to eliminate 2 of the 3 diabetes meds I've been on and am probably going to have to stop the other one as well. My blood sugars run 80 - 100 steady throughout the day with no spiking. I've also lost 4.5 pounds and due to needing to make adjustments on my meds, only actually followed it strictly for 5 of those days. Please if you're going to compare diets, at least get your facts straight!!!

However, now I am on the right track over a 1 year now on low carb, but I still can not eat carbs above 40 grams, or I go sideways -- If your just starting out and you are a sugar lover you're going to have to follow 2 Fit Docs advise to keep Carbs low low low! Atkins was a cardiologist who developed his diet to help this heart patients and if you went on it and stuck to it you would lose weight. I lost 47 pounds and I have never been able to do that on any other diet. I think for me the most difficult part was NO BREAD, OR PIZZA UNLESS IT WAS A SMALL TREAT THAT ONLY HAPPENED ONCE IN A BLUE MOON! Most of us want to see results immediately and with this diet you did, which spurred you on to keep doing it each day. I am not a vegetable person unless it is corn or potatoes or green bean bake, so Atkins was a natural for me, it was easy because I could eat most everything I liked. And you could buy the pee test strips at the pharmacy and check anytime to make sure you were still in ketosis. The one warning I would give to anyone is to make sure you are drinking A LOT OF WATER which will keep you from getting a kidney stone. My other warning is to make sure your bottled water does not contain sugar. Some water companies stick some in to make it more desirable to drink but it will kill your ketosis and stop weight loss! I loved Atkins and still have his books on my shelf!

Hi Jim! Atkins did (does) advocate vitamins and minerals and a few other basics but not what I would consider extreme. The Atkins Brand however does have a lot of different supplements and foods available but I kind of feel like that's the commercialized version of Dr. Atkins vision. We recommend Omega 3's, Electrolytes, Vitamin D (especially in the winter), and I like to take a supplement with carnitine, EGCG, CLA and a couple of other fat metabolizers. I think most of what we use or have liked is available here: www.amazon.com/shop/beckygillaspy.

I remember zero carb mantra, and I was confused bc I KNEW somewhere in my head and heart that I needed vegetables! Finding keto is like finding a key. It's Atkins only better. Low, low extra carb, dial down the protein, shove in green veggies AND quality fat! It's not for every body, but if it works for yours, you WILL KNOW!

@@2FitDocs Totally agree with this assessment. While I watched the video, I wondered why you didn't touch on this as a difference. I tried to follow Atkins several times, way back when, but that induction phase always shot me down. Since starting keto FAR more successfully, I have come to realize that the veggie oils, grains, and certain types of seeds as well as fake sugar everyone recommended at the time were probably a big part of my problem. My subsequent doctor(s) believe I had developed undiagnosed gestational diabetes which never really was controlled. So all of the so-called healthy grains and pasta, and fruit (even in controlled portions) just sent my BG into orbit. (Again, this was reverse diagnosed through anecdotal evidence, as we didn't have blood meters then, and testing apparently fit individuals wasn't the norm.) Subsequently, I really, honestly, could not control the resulting cravings and weight gain as hard as I might try, and it didn't matter how hard I worked out. In fact, I was an exercise instructor. Yeah, I fell into a deep depression that lasted for decades. Keto has changed all that for me. You two are a big part of that. Really inspirational. Thanks so much.

I'm no health expert, and you are the doctor, but from personal experience I do disagree with your comments on FIBER. :-) I was taught by the American Cancer Society that the most important reason for fiber in the diet was because if you are constipated, the toxins stay in your colon longer and this is why lack of fiber causes cancer. When I am burning fat instead of sugars I noticed that "going" has never been a problem, in fact, things seem to slide out of me faster than when I was going low fat and trying to use fiber instead of fat to keep things "moving." Instead, I eat mountains of salad because I LOVE it and it has vitamins, not because I am worried about fiber. When I have been salad-deprived, I still never had problems in that area. You might not agree, but consider it at least. I really don't think I need fiber at all unless I am going low fat, and that thinking is contrary to popular belief to say the least.

Atkins diet 85% protein 10% fat 5% carb. Keto 80% fat 15% protein 5% carb. In real world, 85% of fat is only achievable from jar of pure mayonnaise or pound of butter in every meal. No cut of meat or fish or avocado will give you 80% to 15% fat to protein ratio except butter or mayo. One egg has 5 gram of fat but 10 gram of protein. That is not correct ratio, so egg is not keto! Because ratio is wrong. So keto is not doable long time correctly. What people say they follow keto actually they do Atkins unknowingly. Egg, fish meat All Atkins. Keto I egg 1 pound of butter or mayo and 1 cup of salad, for life! No. Not doable. Atkins on the other hand do-able long term but weight lost on that diet comes back making the diet useless and you damage your metabolism beyound repair. Do Atkins, not to loose weight but control your Diabetes. It is a wonderful diet to reverse diabetes but a lousy diet to lose weight. Actual keto is incredibly difficult to do even for a week!

There are many, many people who have used this diet safely. Personally, I think the answer to your question is one of advocacy vs. science bias, meaning that the people who denigrate keto ignore the science in favor of the diets they 'believe' to be healthy. I suggest you research other presentations on this topic from Dr. Westman, Dr. Malhotra, Ivor Cummins, Dave Feldman, among others. Lots of info, and instead of simply referring to studies like many keto detractors, they provide the actual references - full transparency.
