The song Kevin Barry is a personal favourite of mine. This recording was influenced by an experience I had while singing in Los Angeles many years ago.
The song was frequently requested by a woman originally from Dublin. One night, she recalled her experience as a seven-year-old holding her mother’s hand outside Mountjoy Prison. The date was November 1st 1920. A large crowd had gathered to pray for eighteen-year-old Kevin, who was to be hanged at dawn.
This song never lost its appeal and has been recorded by such people as Paul Robeson, Lonnie Donegan, Don McClean and a host of Irish artists. The British Army also sang Kevin Barry during World War II.
I am joined on this recording by singer/songwriter Susan O’Neill on trumpet. Tara Howley from Riverdance on pipes, her sister Eimear Howley from the Kilfenora Ceili Band on viola and fiddle. Thanks to Martin O’Malley for all his help.
