Just hours after Paramount Network announced the return date for the final episodes of YellowstoneKevin Costner put an end to the speculation surrounding his involvement. Through an Instagram video post, Costner made it clear that he would not be returning to the series.
He started his message with, “An update for you guys. I’ll see you at the movies.” He then went on to explain, “After this long year and a half working on Horizon and thinking about YellowstoneI've realized that I can’t continue with Season 5B or into the future. It was a transformative experience for me, and I know it was for you as well. I just wanted to let you know that I won’t be coming back. I’ve cherished our time together, and I’ll see you at the movies.”
Earlier on Thursday, Paramount had revealed that the second half of the fifth and final season would premiere on Sunday, November 10 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The announcement left out any mention of Costner’s character, John Dutton, prompting fans to look to Costner’s recent interviews for answers. In a recent interview with People, Costner expressed his disappointment that none of his co-stars defended him when stories blamed his absence on scheduling conflicts with his film Horizon: An American Saga. He said, “I read all the stories. I was disappointed that nobody on their side ever stepped up to defend what I actually did for them.”
Despite his departure, Costner hinted at the possibility of returning under certain conditions. “I’ve always felt it might be an interesting moment to come back and finish the mythology of this modern-day family,” he said. “I would consider it if I agreed with how it was being done.”
Previously, in an interview with Today on June 17, Costner indicated he hadn’t completely closed the door on Yellowstone. He mentioned his desire to work more than once a year and how production delays had caused significant disruptions. He also revealed that he had initially signed a contract for three more seasons but ended up with an agreement that split Season 5 into two parts.
Costner explained that he honored his contractual obligations, but the second half of Season 5 was never filmed due to a lack of scripts, which led to production falling apart. This breakdown happened around February 2023 when it was reported that the show would end dramatically and potentially continue with a spinoff starring Matthew McConaughey.
Paramount has yet to provide further details about the spinoff or the exact number of episodes left in Yellowstone. The network did express hope for Costner’s involvement while simultaneously exploring franchise expansions with talents like McConaughey. Fans are left eagerly awaiting the final episodes and the future of the Yellowstone universe.
