Kevin Costner: Pulled Horizon 2 Release Was Reaction to Box Office
Kevin Costner Says Scrapped ‘Horizon 2’ Theatrical Release Was ‘Probably a Reaction’ to First Film’s Box Office Performance: ‘It Didn’t Have Overwhelming Success’
During a press conference for the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, Kevin Costner discussed the postponed theatrical release of his second "Horizon" picture. He speculated that the decision was likely made in response to the first film's poor box office performance.
Regarding the first movie, Costner stated, "It didn't have overwhelming success." "That's how I've had a lot of movies that have held up over time."
"Chapter Two" was released six weeks after "Chapter One," he continued, adding that "it became a studio decision to not." Nevertheless, Costner claimed that everything turned out well because he was able to present "Horizon 2" in Venice.
For me, it went back to my original strategy, which called for me to release films roughly 56 months apart. And that would enable me to visit Venice," he declared. "They wouldn't let us screen the movie here if it wasn't yet released, so I never would have traveled to Venice."
favored by Variety.
Alberto Barbera, the artistic director of Venice, received praise from him for being "the biggest reason this happened."
"It was Alberto who brought this to me and kept my dream alive," he said, adding, "Fuck, Venice keeps saving me!"
The announcement on July 31 that "Horizon 2" would make its world debut on the final day of the festival without competition was a last-minute addition to Venice's schedule. Earlier in the month, the U.S. release of "Chapter 2" was canceled from its scheduled August 16 release date after the franchise's first film, which had an estimated budget of $100 million, barely made $11 million its first weekend.
These failures, he says, have only "increased his desire" to finish the four parts of the planned series.
When something doesn't come to us effortlessly, we sometimes want to give up. However, Costner stated, "There's something about me that only makes me want more when something isn't working. "I believe that this narrative and entertainment piece will endure over time." Unlike everyone else, my desire only grows when I experience rejection and awaken from my disappointment.
Given that we are approaching a presidential election, Costner responded, "It's not a message politically to anyone," when asked if "Horizon" has any lessons for the current situation of America.
"'Horizon' is a reminder of how difficult it was for people to make this journey, not a message to my country," he stated.
"Chapter Two," which stars and is directed by Costner once more, features a cast that includes Danny Huston, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, and Sienna Miller. The movie is a "multi-faceted depiction of the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West," carrying on the events of the epic's first chapter. Apart from directing and starring, Costner collaborated on the screenplay "The Explorers Guild" with Jon Baird and led production through Territory Pictures.
Since "Horizon" is meant to be a four-part series, two more movies are now being produced. "Chapter 3" principal photography started in May and is anticipated to conclude the following year.
Costner hinted at "Chapter 3" as "devastating" and stated that all of the "Horizon" films have been written as the press conference came to an end.
He remarked, "You get to know all these people, and you will see that life keeps coming at them."
When asked about the third movie, Costner stated, "I have to go put my hands on it again and start to push it up. I gotta hurry and not let the rock fall back downhill."
But "Horizon's" future still appears to be up in the air. He remarked, "I'm not sure how I'm going to make 'Three' right now." "But I'm going to succeed,"
