It happens to me on occasion for no reason, but I never sprain it until last year when that happened on an overleveled driveway to the street and fell face first. It's nothing bad but a swollen lip and weakened front teeth. I was using a cane for mental support and found out the day after that I did something to my left ankle. Every time it happens, I'm always weary to walk after because it's a whole reaction to the foot going sideways on you. My left foot did go and turn to jelly, where I banged my knees on the gym court over 10 years ago, I think. Nothing bad as I still went to where it happened, and they healed almost a day after during the next day.

My impression of a lot of injuries of lower extremities is that the shoes play a more significant role than it is conveyed in the media. Does anybody agree? It looks to me that in KDs case, his shoe wasn’t aligning with the natural axis of his foot. Therefore he stepped on the soles edge and initiated the torque that led to the sprain.

if you watch it in slow-motion you can actually see that he is already in an inversion position right before making ground contact; I would not call that slipping, and this should definitely be addressed in physiotherapy from a motor control perspective also interesting to keep in mind is the whole discussion around ankle taping and its usefulness, you could argue that ankle taping gives you a wrong sense of protection (in the end I would say it is more important how you move and land, rather than if you're taped or not)

I have tyo think by now, in the age of front-office enforced, analytics based load management - that the paradoxical and insane rise in injuries is related to the ever-increasing cost cutting that capatalism requires from any growing and profitable business - something is going on with the shoes. Look at Lonzo as a prime example. His career could be over because his dad wanted to 100x his money off terrible quality shoes. The science of shoe tech isnt nearly as advanced as Phil Knight wants everyone to think, aside from marathon runner tech (which prioritizes forward moving efficiency and little else) shoes are almost purely gimmick tech, floor grip, lateral movement, haandling moisture and sticky spots on court - none of that is dialed in as the shoe companies cost cut while adding gimmicks.

Hey Doc, how much are low top shoes responsible for all these lower body injuries to players? Back in like the 2000s and before most lower body injuries happened primarily to 7 footers and above or to guys who landed on someone's foot. Now it seems ankles are rolling or Achilles tesring way more frequently with the change to low tops and it seems like the injuries don't need any contact to happen. As a hooper myself I've noticed that high top Jordans and LeBrons have saved me from an injury like this especially when I was younger and always slashing to the rim. The shoe would basically catch my ankle and keep me upright.
