Looking back at Nash leaving WWF, I would've left too. Nash had a son on the way & he wanted to be home much as possible. Guaranteed money along with working 160 days out of the year, I'll take that in a heartbeat
@Matt-cr4vv

For sure. The deal WCW offered compared to WWF at the time was just too good to pass on. I guess we don’t know what he made in the WWF prior to jumping but Scott Hall has said he made $250K in 1995. So I guess we could probably safely guess that Nash was probably around $400K or so when he left. The offer he had from WCW was so good by comparison I’d be amazed if somebody did turn it down to stay. Guaranteed money is huge but it’s also for a sizeable amount more than he was likely making in the WWF. And of course the much lighter schedule with maximum dates of 180 versus the absurd road schedule WWF had at the time. But another factor that never gets brought up is that Kevin was 37 around the time he jumped. He needed to make as much as he could while he could because time wasn’t in his side to have a ton of years left to cash in. So hard to see why it would even be a tough choice to make - every aspect was so much better than he had. I think most anybody would do the same. And his money basically doubled within a couple years after his move. I think he first made $750K a year but by 1998 I think he was around $1.4M. Can’t fault that.

The attitude change Diesel had after he dropped the belt to Bret was essentially the Nash we saw in WCW, afterwards. It was the Diesel the fans wanted originally, not the whitemeat babyface Diesel Vince presented as Champion.

This is true. As a Diesel fan, I preferred Nash heel. Once he lost the title and jumped shipped ship later I followed. The handcuffs were taken off Kev once he hit WCW with Scott.

I agree with Bruce's opinion on this one ,as a child I was a fan of Diesel and I had no interest in knowing about the person behind the character ,his background or anything. I wanted to try and get drawn in by the character, hell back then I didn't even think of them as characters. Finding out about their backgrounds only causes a disconnect, as a kid these guys are super heros to us SUPER HEROS! not relatable human beings. As a child where is the fun of having our super heros just be regular human beings like the rest of us??

Totally agree - they should be larger than life comic book characters. I was never interested in someone being an All American (an alien teference to mee), for example. As someone who grew up watching wrestling in Ireland, a person's college sports background meant nothing to me.

I absolutely love listening to JR, but he tends to get into a loop sometimes. Like the first hour of this podcast was just: 1. Nash was a smart guy and was a keeper 2. He aligned himself with the right people like Shawn 3. Nash benefitted from his friends and vice versa Over and over and over again.

I think Bruce has some valid points against bringing up a wrestlers background. But I think it really confirms that bringing up a background is a case by case thing. For example, you don’t bring up undertakers college basketball days. But there are other guys who were badass at something and it adds legitimacy to their character. I think it adds more value when a character is new to the company than it does later on. I think when you’re establishing somebody new bringing up a bad ass past could help show why they’re legit and why you should pay attention to them. But once they’re established I don’t think it has a ton of use.

The funniest part about Jim Ross insisting on bringing up wrestlers' backgrounds is what he said about Triple H during the Greenwich snob days, about how Helmsley had a wrestling tutor from the age of 3. I mean just imagine from a Kayfabe perspective as tho an uppity wealthy family would think to get their child a wrestling tutor of all things! it probably wouldn't even be on their radar and for their child at the age of 3 as well!🤣🤣🤣hilarious to think about- "My Dear I really believe our son Hunter would greatly benefit from a wrestling tutor,what do you think? "Oh yes sweetheart, I think that is a splendid idea, "I do believe we should get in touch with that legendary Walter "Killer" Kowalski". "That is a marvelous idea,Darling." "Wonderful!" lmfao🤣🤣🤣

I agree , i fast forward but I wonder if it’s being encouraged , I would hope it’s known by anyone associated with AFS that just because you like wrestling doesn’t mean you enjoy other sports. Infact i do not care to hear about anything other than wrestling , with the exception of “I knew Goldberg back when he was playing football.” If it fits the story that’s one thing. But Ross’s opinion on sports should be a separate podcast. Just my 2 cents.

Bruce is right. The second Diesel was homogenized, pasteurized, and vitamin fortified, I was still craving grindcore bottom of the engine sludge and grit. Vince was erasing everything that made Diesel marketable in the first place (as he would later learn with Steve Austin), and the second Diesel railed in his post championship reign promo as "going corporate" and smearing Vince,, I just had a sense of utter disappointment because by that time Diesel was dead to me. He became bland and non-descript when Kevin Nash was anything but. His jump to WCW with Scott Hall saved and redeemed them both.

1:03:20 I think it's a balance, you want your top megastars to be relatable in some ways but have qualities that we wish we had for ourselves. Everyone looked up to Hogan in the 80s because he was huge and charismatic, we looked up to Warrior because he was ripped beyond belief. We looked up to Stone Cold because he had the balls to stand up to the boss like a lot of us wish we could, we looked up to Rock because he was the coolest guy. When Rock was Rocky Maivia and was a humble kid, people hated him because it didn't match what we saw on the outside. You look at Rock and he shouldn't be just one of the guys, so when he acted like he's better than everyone, fans bought it. There should be an aspirational quality to all top guys as in there's something in them that we want to emulate, otherwise why are we looking up to him?

The WWF/WWE Hulkamania style promotion of who they deem to be their next babyface can sometimes be overbearing and the audience ends up turning on them. I get Bruce’s point but I also get JR’s point because Who is “Diesel”? We know Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels and even tho Undertaker was a character,he had a backstory. Kevin Nash just happens to be far more interesting,charming and likeable than the character of “Diesel”.
