The best terminology is resistant no proof, a kevlar vest will protect you from the first few stabs and slashes but will eventually give way, a ceramic plate will protect you from a few shot but I’ll eventually fail. They’re more there to stop you from dying rather than make you invincible.

If it can stop a bullet I’d sure as heck expect it to provide an adequate amount of resistance/protection against something like a blade. Which it definitely does provide a meaningful and significant amount of protection against blades just not all blades. Kind of like how it doesn’t actually protect you from all bullets.

I've been curious about chainmail over Kevlar. In my mind, the metal jacket would be stripped, and the fragments would be cought by the kevlar. Ik grand thumb did a video about butted larp mail, but there are stronger versions, like riveted mail.
@draketurtle4169

That’s actually was a concept with a sort of ‘scaled’ “bullet proof” vest except it used discs, “dragon skin” I think it was. It was rather effective at stopping bullets just would be a pain in the butt to maintain and replace also had issues thermally I believe.

@@draketurtle4169 Yeah that was done with ceramic plates, But I was thinking more along the lines of closing The Vulnerable spots in today's armor like the arms, legs, and neck. Especially if we ever started using exoskeletons and wanted more armored foot soldier we would still want to keep it light and flexible on the joints
@draketurtle4169
4 ай бұрын
@@MelancholyKnight wouldn’t be practical or an effective use of resources. There is a reason armour regresses back to just the chest and the head. For the resources invested it’s the most critical locations of the biggest target. Protecting the joints with armour just isn’t practical use of resources, you are better off to just do the vest and helmet, if they lose a limb so be it. The only place is genuinely see or believe needing more protection is the thighs since damage to your artery there is lethal in a incredibly short amount of time. But otherwise mail just wouldn’t do much for the resources invested, the added weight to the person and that it likely wouldn’t offer significant protection against the calibre of rounds expected to be encountered… Maybe for protection against debris and fragments it could be useful but against a powerful cartridge doubt it (and again soldiers getting crippled is a calculated risk the army already considers and does not care about)

I'm sure the individuals who go on Reddit are all intelligent well meaning people but the culture on Reddit is so contrarian and focused on pedantic squabbling that they will strip every subject of nuance to the point of complete logic breakdown to try to get that "well actually" moment. I used it a lot during the pandemic and got deep into it myself, they only care about turning every petty little thing into an argument when it doesn't need to be and arguing in the worst, most pedantic way. I'm guessing it's because it skews pretty young overall and, at least at one point in time, had a reputation for being a good place to have a reasonable, intelligent conversation. Now it's just "prove everything wrong no matter how much sense it makes". And people in KZitem comments are just fuckin dumb. So i wouldn't put that much stock into what either is saying.

Bullets are the greatest form of stabbing things humanity has achieved, arrows were slow and bows were hard to use, swords had to be made very specifically and even then weren't consistent. Bullets are small, relatively thin, go very very fast, and literally made specifically to go through things! OF COURSE A BULLETPROOF VEST CAN RESIST INFERIOR FORMS OF PENETRATION! Wrenches aren't made for bashing people over the head but if you've played TF2 Engie you know they're really good at that!

Not at all contradicting your point, but just like with bullets, getting stabbed with a sword while wearing a Kevlar vest is still going to hurt, a lot probably. It’s a lot of force in a small point, so it’s very possible to break ribs and transfer the force of the blow through the Kevlar, even if there isn’t any penetration.

However, what would the legal ramifications be for someone who did that and saw this video. Knowing that your armor would provide a statistically significant level of protection. Would that change how acceptable lethal force would be in certain contexts?
