Been playing banjo and now use six string and 12 string guitars in open G. I've been looking for this information, in a simple format,... to be able to play in other keys. Thank you for keeping it basic. Good views of both hands. VERY helpful!

Thank you for shedding light on this C tuning. It sounds wonderful. I have only played a little so far in Taro Patch Open G.

Well, mine is actually C GDGBD, that's the drop C part. But I'm not really a student of tunings, there are many out there and many different names for them. Thanks for visiting and commenting. Fran

And to this day I thought I was the only one playing in this tunint. Darn it :-) well maybe I'm one of a few who have this on the electric guitar? Anyway it sounds wonderful and almost anything can be played in this tuning. Thanks for the video

I've been surprised at how widely this tuning is used. But you're right, you are the first I've heard of playing drop C on an electric guitar. Thanks for stopping by, Fran

I'm glad it's widely used. It's a wonderful tuning and it deserves to be at least as popular as the standard tuning. Yeah, I might be the first electric ambassador :-) in the metal music world when you say dropped C, they usually referring to a standard tuning dropped to C-G-C-F-A-D

I’ve been playing Taro patch so long I can’t even use standard anymore. But I always found the low D kinda useless. Till I discovered this tuning about 2 years ago. It’s my standard. The only thing I ever vary is tuning the B up to a C.

Drop C is a very cool tuning indeed. Do you do a lot of Leonard Kwan stuff? Fran

@@homebrewedmusic no actually not familiar but I will check it out. My roots are central Texas open G is a very common tuning there but most just remove the low D string. I’m a pro but guitar has not been my main gig. Until recently.

Hi, I am beginner, old geezer. I like drop D and am thinking of going that way. Then you mentioned that any chord can be played by barring the proper 6th string note. That sounds handy. Are the strings tighter in open G than in open D?

Aloha and mahalo Fran! I'm a displaced island boy and have slowly been going back to my roots, beginning with slack key for the past five years. Primarily in taropatch but slowly learning Open C and Hi'ilawe. Do you have any favorite right hand patterns?
@franguidry

I don't use right hand patterns, Lanakila. The closest I come to a pattern is trying to keep my thumb pushing out the rhythm, while my fingers try to find the melody and decoration. Fran

aloha again...correction on the tuning in my post. It is actually Drop C...not Open C....big difference, yeah? Mahalo

Overall, the strings in open D are just a little looser than in open G. The second and third strings make a noticeable difference, they're both lowered in open D. Fran
