1st Battalion 8th Marines was sent to Key West when it became apparent that Castro had opened the floodgates and the Mariel Boatlift was going to be a humanitarian crisis. We stayed in beautiful Key West for over a month and had a blast. I stood guard duty at the NAS Truman Annex gate that's around the corner from the Southernmost Point, the tourists would wave at us as they went by. Have such great memories of there, gotta go back before I die.

Awesome tour, Adam and Mom. That tree you liked the roots is called a Banyan Tree. The trees are not native to Fl. but was brought to FL by Thomas Edison. Thomas planted a four-inch diameter sapling Ficus bengalensis in 1925 on the grounds of his winter estate in Fort Myers, Florida. The tree was collected in India and a gift from rubber-magnate Harvey Firestone. The tree now covers approximately one acre, with a canopy height of sixty feet.

Watching the Conch Train tour reminded me of a funny story. Our old office was right by the Mile Marker 0 sign and all day long you would hear the train drive by and tell the same joke how it's the most popular sign on the island to steal. One day I showed up for work and someone actually stole the sign and the train driver wasn't prepared for his and when they pulled up to the intersection just said "Oh look......someone actually stole the sign...uhhhhhh moving on."
