Oh! I expected this video to be more about specific inputs/tricks in smb, but it focused more on the literal hardware and irl factors. To go into the tangible, in game differences, I think fast accel inputs or L+R neutral abuse (or L+D+R) are the most relevant topics imo. I think at the end of the day, nothing has been overcentralized to keyboard and if anything people switch in the other direction more often, so 🤷♂️

I grew up in the early 80’s with original hardware .Im an old school purist. I think the most authentic and correct way to play is original everything. However considering the movement away from original hardware as it ages and gets harder to use on modern displays, I think keeping properly calibrated hardware/emulation allows for everyone to play and try. So all approximately equal input methods and game play methods should be allowed. All things being equal it’s about game output not game input. It’s the record that matters.

The main problem I have with the debate itself (not the issue, but specifically the DEBATE around the issue) is that people overstep in their statements when making their point. It's one thing to argue that there is no significant advantage, it's another to express that by saying they are *equal*. They are not exactly the same, so they are not equal. One has an advantage over the other, it's just a matter of which, and whether that advantage is significant enough to warrant consideration. But what always happens is that people have that desire to use a very powerful statement format rather than a more accurate one, and so they choose the word "equal" when that's not accurate. Also remember, there may be no clear cut advantage *that is known right now*, but that is subject to change depending on potentially unknowable factors moving forward. So don't get so entrenched into one side that you end up not willing to continue to consider new information as it comes because you start to take criticisms of one side personally rather than objectively.

I have a question, in your video you talked about pressing left + right, and how in emulators you can disable it and it will register nothing, you even say that the fact that register nothing is a disadvantage. But is that true? The type of game I play the most is Fighting games, why is this information relevant? Because in the fighting game community there is a lot of controversy about the hitbox controller (which is basically a glorified keyboard) and how it gives players an advantage because you can press left + right and will register nothing. for example, hitbox players are known for having incredibly fast dash inputs, in a fighting game to do a dash you have to press forward twice, but in hitbox and keyboards you can simply press forward once and flick backwards for a frame and the dash will come out. This happens because you press forward, the flick resets the input, so you press nothing, and after the flick the forwards input is registered again. the game reads this input as "Forward, neutral, forward", even though you only had to press forwards once. this also makes a lot of direction based special moves easier. I know Mario Bros has a lot of difficult tricks where you have to press combinations of directions incredibly quickly, change directions and even press a direction, release for 1 frame and press it again, do you think this mechanic i explained (which is not available for controller players) can be used in speedruns somehow? maybe they are already being used? Or maybe its useless for the context of this specific game?
@iBall1
Жыл бұрын
That’s a great point to bring up! The technique you brought up has actually has been used before for fast right releases and some other things, but it’s generally heavily frowned upon by pretty much every keyboard player. It’s just seen as abusing the mechanic or “bad sportsmanship” because it makes certain things a lot easier for sure (pretty similar to the hitbox example). This topic actually came up a few years ago and we all came to this conclusion. There’s technically nothing stopping you from pressing neutral for a frame to get a fast right release, but top keyboard runners have avoided doing this for a while.
@Shyang2
Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the answer. The last paragraph of your answer shows the possibility of future trouble. Maybe one day someone will simply say "screw it" and use it on his runs, this advantage can result in a discussion of "should we allow this technique? Isn't the ban of these kind of technique kind of arbitrary? Should we simply ban keyboards all together? Honestly, on this subject i side with those 16%, but that's just my opinion, and i'm not that well versed in Mario Bros speedruns. But that's indeed an interesting discussion.

This video is something that should've been done a LONG TIME AGO. I have absolutely nothing against Niftski, he's awesome on both Keyboard and Original Controller. There're some great points about availability of original hardware and it's cost and the quality of that original hardware that is almost 40 years old. And it all comes to a personal preference. I do prefer emulators... as I'm just broke to get myself a real console. But I agree with the fact that playing on original hardware in an authentic way to experience the game. PS. Those who were saying that Keyboard wasn't a thing on NES... REALLY? Never heard of BASIC Keyboards? PPS. I'm pretty sure there is a way to use a USB keyboard on a original console via converter... And that would be mind-blowing for those who are has something against keyboards.

One of my NES controllers are fine but the B button seems to have a mind of its own and only seems to work when it feels like it. And the other one isn't even usable. While I am not a big fan of runner´s using keyboard, as long as no impossible inputs can be made (e. g. pressing left and right dpad at the same time), it is fine for me. Of course macros and turbo buttons should not be used generally, although there are probably some exceptions where this also makes sense. Obviously it´s much more accessible to use an emulator and recording can be done with open source and free2use software... although capturing consoles isn´t expensive at all if you don´t want the perfect quality.

@trevor245
Жыл бұрын
@@iBall1 It's a super easy mod though. No soldering required and if you have the right bits to open the NES it takes like 20 minutes. Assuming you are wanting to get into speedrunning on official hardware getting some tools wouldn't be that bad of an idea regardless as you'd probably also want to clean the 72 pin (not replace new replacements are low quality, the pins bend back way sooner than on original ones. Only replace if you use original refurbs). I am not really in the market for stuff like pre modded consoles but I am sure you can find region free nes consoles locally for only a small increase in price over pal only. However having said all of this, I do not know how the speedrunning community for mario 1 deals with 50 hz and 60 hz respectively. I assume 60 hz is the standard but if a run at 50 hz is submitted does it get scaled up or is there a different category for 50 hz?
@iBall1
Жыл бұрын
If the mod is easy then it definitely could be done, I just haven't seen anyone actually play NTSC SMB on a console modded that way yet. I'm also not sure if there are other differences in a PAL NES that make modding a bit more difficult, but you seem to know more about that than I do. As for PAL and NTSC differences, the game at 50hz is entirely different and actually a separate category from the NTSC version. And when it comes to region free NES consoles, pretty much all third party consoles aren't allowed on the leaderboards because of inaccuracies with their emulation/gameplay. There are a few exceptions, but those are around the same price or more expensive than an actual NES.
