He forgot to stress the fact that the triple-A's inspections were also probably a significant cost on top of the shortages.

@girardbcp GDP is a lousy measure of an economy's health. Government spending never produces any wealth, yet it is considered in this statistic. Production in the private sector is the important statistic, along with unemployment.

@girardbcp Well you're right about one thing, FDR wasn't loved for nothing, he was loved for his powers of propaganda and a slew of propagandists praising his name since then.

Mr. Hill-- I don't doubt that some people were genuinely assisted by the New Deal programs. My doubts regard the overall effectiveness of the legislation. Can you cite specific statistics to prove your point? :)

Very convincing speech. Unfortunately it does not tell the complete story. My father and mother were older. They grew up in FDR's presidency. I relatives that were involved in building national parks and one in construction. What Mr Folsom tells you didn't work, really did for the vast majority. A relative who was trained and then helped work in national parks, and a relative who worked building roads, went on to do construction projects of all kinds for the rest of their lives.

No one is saying that "work" wasn't created or that people didn't learn things on those jobs. The overall topic here is that the New Deal did not pull the US out of the depression, but rather prolonged it. Economic recovery could have opened up the same opportunities with no cost to the nation and actually at a gain if not for the New Deal actions.

Not sure how that proves that the New Deal was a good idea. What you are advocating for is a job training program.

Hey Dr. Folsom, I'm sure this is a very good speech, but you see those sticks in front of you? They're called microphones. You might want to turn them on or try speaking into them.

@@TheMaestroWay Do you speak for "the rest of us"? I was merely commenting that his voice seems to go in and out. Perhaps watching with headphones would have helped, but your sarcasm was uncalled-for. I owned, played games on, and programmed a Commodore 64 at the age of 9. They didn't use mice and I guarantee the sound would be much worse.
