Back in the late 80's we would bomb top to bottom at Keysone night skiing when we got off work and had the place to ourselves. The Gondola guy told us that ski patrol wanted him to hold us up but he was a cool dude and was laughing about it. I learned to ski there when I was just a toddler -the place feels like home, BUT I have yet to have a single interaction with a yellow jacket that didn't feel like talking to a brick wall on a power trip. I've flown through that section many a time without issue (just before montezuma lift turnoff). Looks like the douche who tried to flag you down higher up the mountain radio'ed down and exaggerated a wee bit. Best to stay on North Peak and Outback, IMHO. Cat Dancer and surrounding terrain is the shit. Hardly anybody else there and zero yellow jackets. And to try and explain Keystone's POV a bit... as you're aware, Schoolmarm is usually packed with kids and beginners. They post yellow jackets there not because of experienced/well controlled skiers/boarders, but out of control assholes who do run into others. My daughter, 8 at the time, was hit by an out of control skier resulting in a giant yard sale. She was startled but was fine, and the guy was very apologetic. I helped the guy get back into his skis and asked him to take it easy. What happened with you guys was lame, but unfortunately they did what they did based on allegations made by douchey mcdoucheboat higher up the mountain. They're not all bad and they serve a valid purpose. Could they use some re-training? Probably. You should reach out to Keystone and explain it as you did here. They'd probably listen.

Snow boarders are much more dangerous due to their backside blind spot. They are less likely to see someone overtaking them on their backside and the can turn into them with out knowing they were there. According to every slope responsibility code I've seen, people downslope have the right of way and it's your responsibility to give them enough leeway to avoid them. It's not like skiers are looking over their shoulder upslope all the time, so they're subject to the same blindspot. Boarders are looking upslope at least half the time on their toeside carve lol

Yellow Jackets are "mountain safety." Ski patrol is typically red and black with white medical crosses on their uniform. They are different. A lot of mountains don't even have a Mountain Safety department. Vail seems to be associated with popularizing that practice. Ski patrol is about helping people when they are hurt and making sure the terrain is safe for public. Please don't let those guys tarnish your opinions of ski patrol. We love you guys and we love what we do. We aren't in this life to take passes.

I have personally seen little kids get taken out and their legs broken by fast snowboarders. It’s not about you and needing an experience! Get some respect and go to the North peak and ride some open blues.

Schoolz is the most dangerous run at Keystone for this very thing and I think they are trying to fix the problem

Any good snowboarder can avoid collisions easily. Anyone who was going fast and crashed into someone else was definitely a beginner who lost control. They weren’t going any faster than the people in front of them and had total control when they were stopped.

Keystone needs to send "Rod" back to safety school. Jonathan, I had a chance to review your unedited video of that run. "Rod" waved you down at the top of the run (from about 100 feet away). All four of you slowed down immediately (look at head direction and boards) then hit a tree line jump, passed second yellow jacket without any interaction (within 1 foot), then passed third yellow jacket without any interaction (within 5 feet) and kept proper speed to the bottom of the run where the forth yellow jacket can be seen sprint across the hill to get in front of you guys, a couple hundred yards ahead of you. "Rod" claiming you flipped him off is bullshit! He should retire. Nice job! Great post.

Johnathan Buckhosue, I am not kidding you man, I had almost the exact same thing happen to me at Eldora my first run this year. I was going down a super steep drop right before a long catwalk, since I am a boarder I had to get speed to be able to make it through the flat catwalk at the bottom. I am going down the hill, fast but in control, I come over a lip and suddenly I am greeted by 10 Ski Patrol taking up the entire catwalk practicing bringing people down in sleds. I was going pretty darn quick since this was the bottom of a steep drop and they were below a lip in front of me so I could not see them from above, so I had little time to react. I slam on the breaks, yell "look out", and ride through them without hitting anyone. They were going maybe 10 MPH at the bottom of a massive drop to a long ass catwalk, there were no signs at the top warning of this training, no Ski patrol further back asking to slow down or warning people, and no one fell down when I road past. After I got through the group I look back and there are a few of them chasing me down. They stop me, take my pass, say I was out of control, and kicked me off the mountain and said I have to take the safety class. I have been snowboarding for 10+ years, I am non-stop looking down the hill watching others and adjusting my path so I do not hurt anyone or myself, I will literally learn nothing from a 2 hour safety class. They argue I was riding out of control and not giving way to the riders down the mountain, but if I was out of control, people would have been hurt, people would have fallen, but instead I controlled my speed, adapted to the ski patrol blocking the whole path, and road past with no issue. This is 100% their fault, they should be taking the safety class, and they should know how unsafe they were being by blocking the whole cat walk. Oh and this was opening week with 5 runs open. Ski Patrol who encourage safety thought it would be safe to practice medical sleds at the bottom of the steepest drop open before the longest catwalk during opening week. Can someone explain how that is safe at all?

Here's a question.. What's more dangerous; a clearly competent and capable snowboarder, snowboarding in control, or a kook of a dude shuffling around perpendicular to the flow of traffic and inserting his body in front of you to get you to stop for some bs reason? Here's another question.. How many Ikon passes did you just sell?
@perdidobiker

Please surreptitiously video the safety class...it should be high-larious. You and your buddies always board in control and no one is in danger of sharing the slopes with you guys. Last year in early May at Breck, I as a 68 year old skier was slammed in from the rear by an out control beginner snowboarder right in front of a pair of yellowjackets. No injury, but the impact was hard enough that both of my skis were released. There was no mention of the need for a safety class for my assailant by the officials. Johnathan, keep up the great work and I hope to see you on the slopes next week when I’m in Summit County.

You're an expert snowboarder on a GREEN run, well marked with slow zones/signs, with beginners!!! Beginners are unpredictable. They don't have their head on a swivel. They're just trying to stay on their feet. A skilled skier/snowboarder may think they can avoid someone, and most times maybe they can, but beginners don't follow a predictable ski pattern. They're all over the place! Especially little ones. Let them have a somewhat safe place to learn! It's one run! Go to the blues and the black runs!

The clip at the end where you got told to slow down, didn’t seem like you were going particularly fast and the slope was very wide and empty. They need to go after people who go too fast through busy slopes, and passing too close, and pull over those who are obviously too fast for their ability.

As someone who worked as mountain safety at keystone for a year (to get the epic pass for free 😅), I completely agree with everything being said. They said that we had to give write ups everyday in order to keep our job and praised those who wrote a ton of senseless write ups like this one. Most of the squad was cool, but the leaders took the job wayyyy too seriously obviously (like the guy in this video). Our job was to maintain safety, and they took it entirely too far. They straight up told us that they make more money off the families that spend thousands to vacation there over the local season pass holders.
