Good to see you back here. With the addition of a appropriately sized touch screen and case the VIM4 could make for a good versatile DIY tablet computer system.

I love the way you think! The VIM4 would make a very good base for such a project. I reckon the biggest challenge would be the power (battery) but the tablet form factor gives a fair bit of real estate for cells, so I'm sure it could be done.

Fun video. I look forward to seeing what you guys do with this board. Subcribed. I've had mine for about a month now. I also picked up a vim 3 case and the m2 expansion board. Love it. I've been using it mainly as as an Ubuntu desktop, but I did get docker running and have been playing with various container images including PIHole. It's a great little computer, but not perfect. The little fan is loud. And the system gets warm. I noted the cpu temps in the high 50s/Low 60s C. I now have a small 24v fan running off usb power cooling it down about 10/15 C. The Vim4 has no audio jack. Since the HDMI monitor I have it connected to doesn't have sound, I bought a usb hub with sound card. This is a development board, still in development. Khadas seems to be actively working on the OSs. I haven't tried the HDMI in yet, but last I heard it was only working on Android OS. As yet, there is no case for it. The Vim3 case kinda fits, but you have to drill out a hole where the HMDI in port is or take off the walls and use standoffs.

I'm eager for when someone creates and offers a STL file so we can 3D print a VIM4 case.... but meantime, the VIM3 case mod sounds doable (and they are very nice looking cases). I'm sure Khadas will have an official case very soon. Thanks for watching and subscribing!!

for me, the VIM4 is $250 thereabouts with shipping a little bit more, and with no cooling (so throttled) a bit less. This is super expensive for a SBC. If you want to run a lite linux system get a second hand PC/laptop with x86 and full package support. If you really want to use a SBC for a robot/project and want to run 6-10 processes on bare metal/RTOS or even headless linux lite, the hexa core Rock Pro 64 at $80 cant be beat, you can add a 128 GB eMMC for another $50, and that's half the price of the VIM 4. The PCIe on the RockPro64 is Gen 2, and has 4 PCIe lanes, this is better than the Gen 2 PCIe M.2 on the VIM 4 as it is only has a single Lane. The RockPro64 would need a PCIe to M.2 adapter to use a M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD - but thats only $15. Anyway the more the merrier, but the Pi 4 is still king - no matter whats in the warehouse.

I haven't watched Category5 in quite a while. Went to watch it today on Roku but it tells me the channel has been removed. Is that the case? There's no Roku channel? I don't see it on kodi addons either. The newest video I see is months old? Has Category5 stopped? If not, is there no Roku channel or kodi addon? If there are neither, which is the right youtube channel?

Really impressive board. I'm sure it's worth what you pay for, however I can't see myself paying that price for an sbc at this time.
@LinuxTechShow

It's definitely a step up. The price is proportional to what you get, and considering it's readily available, it's actually really reasonable. 😁 Thanks for watching.

I think the Rockchip RK3588 boards are faster.
@LinuxTechShow
2 жыл бұрын
Try ordering one alongside a VIM4 and tell me which one arrives faster 😂 Lots of amazing SBCs, so a big part of it is actual availability right now. Once we are through this time of the chip shortage, prices across the board will be higher, but we'll have many more really exceptional SBCs in the market. The VIM4 is ahead of that curve and shipping now.

@@LinuxTechShow the RK3588 soc’s are definitely better boards. Khadas is really good as well. The vim4 definitely stepped up from the vim3 pro which I have and use everyday. You are absolutely correct with statement about availability. I have wanted an upgrade from my vim3 for sometime. I haven’t pulled the trigger on the vim4 although incredibly tempted to because the Rock5b is taking so long(I’m impatient) to come out. Great video. Thanks

@@LinuxTechShow I don't need to order one, as I already have the Mekotronics R58X since early April. You can check it on my channel. They are not as small as a Pi or VIM4, so some people might say they are not SBCs. Mekotronics also just released a trimmed down version, the R58 for $170 (without shipping/taxes).

Definitely! The Orange Pi Zero is incredible! Our mentions are by no means extensive, and we've used a LOT of boards in the past (not all of which we mentioned), but our purpose in this video is to express to users that there are exceptional "non-Raspberry Pi" SBCs out there, and it's time to start exploring the options.
