This is review is for you. For those of buying a first car. Or buying a last car. Hell it's for anybody buying a car. Anybody that is who has other things to spend their money on besides a car and need the best they can get for the money they can get.
Because under that sheet, ok it's my doona, is probably the smartest buy you can get in Australia right now.
Ladies and gentlemen the Kia Cerato. And... and this is really important - it's the base-spec car the Cerato S.
See Kia is selling the Cerato S automatic at $19,990 and they've told they have no plans to change that price - don't make a fool outta me Kia, that's my job.
Now it's not just that it isn't much money, it's the what you're getting.
You know the Hyundai i30? It's no. 3 selling car in Australia, well that is pretty much an i30 for less money. See Hyundai owns a big chunk of Kia and the Cerato uses the same platform as the i30.
I bet it annoys Hyundai that the Cerato is prettier than their i30. See Kia's all started looking better after they hired a design guru from Audi about 10 years ago. This Cerato is the latest upgraded version - with then new bolder more upright grille, the narrower headlights and a profile which looks long and sleek.
Now there are four grades of Cerato, but if you're after the best value for money, you need to go for this entry level car.
OK so what does the Cerato S get or not get?
So coming standard are front and rear parking sensors, it gets foglights but not DRLs it gets heated wing mirrors tinted windows, but and it gets wheels they're not alloy wheels like the rest of the Ceratos have, there steel and those are just plastic hubcabs - steel is stronger than alloy. Also you get a full sized spare wheel - which these days is getting rarer and rarer.
While we're here check this boot, the pram fits in perfectly. When we tested the i30 back in july the same pram only just managed to fit with a bit of persuasion. This is only four litres bigger but it makes all the difference.
See even though the i30 and Cerator are on the same platform, the Cerato is actually longer. Only by 5cm, but when it comes to legroom every mm counts especially for me with these tentacles. I'm sitting behind my diving position and these stacks of room.
That extra length gives you long back doors which make getting in and out easier - look at that.
Oh paint, the only colour that is free is white. That is a colour called Gravity Blue and it will cost you $520. There are two reason not to get it. The first is although it's beautiful colour, it's impossible to keep clean, I've just washed this car and it looks filthy. The second reason is you should spend that $500 bucks on something more important - in here.
OK the Cerato S standard media unit that looks like it's from 1984, but for $500 you can get the AV pack which will give you a seven inch screen, reversing camera and, Android Auto (Apple Carplay will come later too).
The Cerato S's cabin is simple and yes there's some hard plastics about but it stylish with dark coloured materials used throughout. There's the finned dash board, the driver orientated centre console stack and you don't know how happy those grown up seats make me - nothing makes me more upset that jazzy public transport patterns on a car just because its affordable.
Storage is excellent. If you're like me and arrive at a car with handfuls of junk, you'll be pleased to know there's a big bucket here to dump it all. There's also cup holders here and in the back fold down armrest and bottle holders in the front and back doors.
What's it like to drive? Kia has tuned this suspension for Australian roads they have totally nailed it - comfortable ride, and really impressive handling for a 20 grand car.
The engine: in the snout is 2.0 litre four cylinder engine. It's probably the one area I reckon could be improved. It's a tad noisy and not as responsive as the more sophiscated i30's engine.
But the Steering is great, the seating position is so so good. Visibility is good too, although that A-pillar gets in the way a little bit.
So bargain hunters there you have it the Cerato S - in terms of quality, features, value for money, and looks it's unbeatable right now.
