Hey guys, I believe the actual main culprit was the bottom of the intercooler blew out and caused a boost leak. This caused the CHRA/turbo to act goofy as well. After replacing the intercooler and CHRA cartridge the problems went away and boost returned. I plan on throwing together a video on how to replace the CHRA cartridge soon but the turbo will be off the vehicle already.

My turbo Forester makes this exact sound whenever I start it for the first time each day. And now I've lost a fair amount of power. This is the first video I've found with that noise! Thanks for posting it. I'm taking it to the mechanic tomorrow and will mention the issue you found.

Yeah i recommend having an air leak test done like my other video. Sounds like youre loosing your boost somewhere. My issue ended up being the welds on the bottom of my intercooler blew out so i was losing all my boost. Best of luck and keep me informed! Thanks

Have you figured out what’s causing that issue. My car doesn’t do that when it starts but when I’m driving and I press hard on the gas I hear that noise.

It was the CHRA turbo cartridge. Basically the turbine that spins inside the physical turbo housing had a bad seal/minor damage that caused it to make the howl sound. I purchased a replacement cartridge from ebay for $100 and installed myself. It took care of the problem. Not the easiest job/in a tight spot but doable with the right tools and time. Hope this helps!

Just replied on the waste gate adjustment video and sighed a bit not seeing the turbo work video. But... at your comment here about doing just the turbo cartridge replacement (wish RockAuto had suggested that) I would take that to mean your adjustment of the waste gate... was based upon just a tweak of the previous adjustment on your factory wastegate? Anyway, as I'd mentioned there my new turbo is (maybe) reading very low. I'm using your information to verify my readings tomorrow. But dang, the cartridge would have been a breeze compared to birthing a turbo "assembly" from out of a Kia Optima.

Do you have a video by chance about replacing the CHRA cartridge?

How did you determine that the CHRA was bad? Was there a lot of play on the shaft, broken fins, etc?

Did you end up changing the turbo for a new turbo?

I wasnt entirely sure what the issue was and ended up changing the whole turbo yes. However, the bottom of the intercooler was blown out causing me to lose boost so that was the initial problem. If you are certain that your turbo is the issue, you may be able to get by with only.changing out the chra cartridge. I plan on making another video explaining this process.

If you are having acceleration problems/similar noises, first thing to check would be air leaks. I recommend removing the hose on the driver side of the turbo as well as the hose connected to the throttle body. I took my air compressor and blew air thru the system (i literally screwed an air adapter into the top of a waterbottle and sealed it with gasket maker, then connected this to the hose that connected to the turbo in order to check for leaks). I also covered the hose that connected to the throttlebody with some ziplock bags and rubber bands to complete a sealed pressurized system. I plan on making a video of this soon as well.

The fan inside of the turbo will wiggle up and down. It makes a metal kind of sound now. How difficult did you find changing the turbo? Any tips or tricks you found on the way?

@@blueglovemechanic did you have any carriage movement in your old turbo?

@@scootrainorshine i noticed some damage to the fins, i dont believe i had any play. Changing the turbo with the engine in the car sucks, not going to lie. They designed it in an extremely difficult location and getting the oil lines to re-align take alot of work. However, weather youre planning on just replacing the chra cartridge, or the entire turbo assembly, the turbo assembly needs to be removed. Luckily its only held on by 1 clamp which consists of 2 bolts. You then have an oil feed line and coolant feed line on the top, and an oil return line on the bottom
