This is so good the way you broke it down and explained acute vs. chronic. You give SOLID information because I have been down this road too and looking back, I can see so many things that were overlooked and/or the medical experts didn't have the answers for me. Science has come a long way in the last 20-30 years for kidney health and they know so much more now than they did then. Another thing I'd like to mention is the recent passing of Tina Turner. I did not know she had kidney disease due to high blood pressure (untreated and not realizing the correlation until after her stroke in 2009). She ultimately had to go on dialysis until she received a kidney transplant from her husband in 2017. She made a personal statement for the "show your kidneys love" campaign, which spreads awareness for kidney disease.

Very good message! The more you research and learn, the more you know what questions to ask your doctor! I didn't know squat about the kidneys' function or anything else about them! So I had no idea what questikns to ask the kidney doctor, and he didn't volunteer much either. Maybe he assumed I knew more than I did. But I'm having to wonder how good of a doctor he is. Unfortunately, I believe he's the only one around for 50 miles. I know there are only 2 Renal Dieticians in the whole state of Oklahoma, and they are both 3 hours away. So, it's very important to know as much about the disease as you can so you know what your doctor should be telling you!

You are so right about not knowing what questions to ask if you don't understand what's going on. Also, we need more doctors and renal dietician to help those with Kidney Disease!

Thanks. I trusted my first Dr. and she didn't even want me to give her regular blood teats. I think she waited 3 months before she got my third blood test because the second one was showing improvement. I had plummeted to stage 4 by then. The guy I have from my area now refused to answer my questions, so my husband and I called the best University in our state the taught nephrology and got an appointment with a doctor there.

Good advice! I hadn't thought of that as away to tell. If you feel more stressed after seeing your doctor find out why. Maybe a different doctor would be a better fit.

Thank you so very much for this wonderful information! I recently was told that I have chronic kidney disease. I’m stage three. I thought I should have a nephrologist, but my family doctor says not yet. What I’m afraid of is that I get to stage four, I have to go on dialysis and that’s it! I know that they have Medication out there that could possibly slow down the progression of the disease. Do I have to wait until I’m stage four to have a nephrologist any questions that you could answer for me would be wonderful. Thank you. Nina.

Hi Nina. My Practitioner sent me to the kidney doctor. I'm early stage 3. He would have sent me sooner, but when his nurse called and said my bloodwork came back with such and such results and asked if I wanted to see the kidney doctor (I can't spell it), I said no and that it was probably just because I hadn't been drinking much water. Unfortunately, she didn't tell me that that didn't have anything to do with the results. So, it was another 3 months before I had bloodwork done again. And so that time, I said yes when asked if I wantesnto see the Kidney doctor! I wish I had seen him sooner! But I am now learning as much as I can about Chronic Kidney Disease.

I would try to get into seeing a nephrologist they can give you more information. If not, maybe try to find a renal dietitian to help? Either way try to eat as healthy as you can and drink plenty of water.

I got my AMAI Baxter dialysis machine yesterday. All went well last night. No alarms. Slept 7hours. There were two problems. I had to start over because the machine wouldn’t stay plugged in. I lost my first cassette because the nurse and I set it up and it shut off when I went to work. I duck tapped the plugs to the wall. We have loose plugs in our townhouse. I was exhausted but got set up and I was all set. The cat was well behaved and stayed in the other room and didn’t howl at the closed door. It’s 7am and the day is mine. I found manuals to be exhausting. This was great. I slept on both sides and had no problems. Tonight I’ll add my sleep apnea machine. It was hard to train and work but I got through. Except without my Mountain Dew my life is mine again.

I'm glad things are working for you! I found that If I was laying on a certain side when the machine was draining it would beep. I got into the habit of sleeping more on one side then the other. And if I happen to be on the wrong side when it's draining, I'll just turn over before it beeps and I don't even wake up anymore.

You've mentioned your prescription medication may have caused your kidney disease, however, you did not add that to Diabetes and high blood pressure causes. Does other prescription medication like pain meds cause kidney disease?
@kidneykeeping

Some medications are broken down in the liver and some are broken down by the Kidney's. NSAIDs are broken down in the kidney's. You'll need to ask your doctor and read the fine print on the medications you take or are going to take. I wish I had done a better job of this.

Once the kidneys have completely failed, you must either do dialysis or have a transplant to live. The doctors will have you start doing dialysis or get a transplant before your kidneys completely stop working because you can not live without your kidneys.

Thank you for another informative video! You mentioned itchy scalp. With CKD, does the itchiness usually occur on the scalp? Can this occur in stage 1 or 2?
@kidneykeeping
Жыл бұрын
So many things can cause skin irritation, soaps, cleaning supplies, allergies. For many people with CKD , the itchiness is on the palms of your hands. I think people notice it more because it's a less common place to have itchiness. But for me it was my scalp and it wasn't something I noticed until I was in stage 4. Hope that helps.
