I have seen your film clips in other documentaries, but your compilation and explanation is great 👍 I was born in Kiel in 1949. From my childhood in the 1950s, I can still remember the many ruins that still existed in the city. Much had already been cleared away, but there were still many hollow houses everywhere without windows, roofs or floors. Our house (a corner house) was also missing the corner and the 4th floor. It was not rebuilt until 1956. When I can remember, when I was about 4 years old, the harbor basin where the wreck of the Scheer lay had already been filled with rubble from the city and the shipyard. My father and I often took a tour on a fjord ship across the Kiel Fjord and I can still remember that there were still some wrecks and debris from the Hipper and the Emden in the Heikendorf Bay, as my father told me. After the war, my father worked for several years as a boat engineer for the Kiel harbor police, which was under British command until 1949, and therefore knew every corner of the harbor and what had happened here and there during the war. He also witnessed how the Scheer was dismantled and how much of it is still buried under rubble today. It is practically the entire ship, above its former waterline. Everything inside the hull and the machines were removed. At the time, however, it was not possible to salvage and dismantle everything because shortly after the war there was no suitable floating crane and many of the necessary utensils no longer existed or were not available. Unfortunately, my father died 8 years ago. I would have so many questions for him today, because my interest in the history of my city has only grown as I have gotten older. Anyone who has parents who were contemporary witnesses should ask, ask, ask, because in a few years there will be no more contemporary witnesses from this time.

I live in Kiel and never saw many pictures like this of my once so heavy destroyed hometown. I try to find spots in you pictures of Kiel where I am able to recognize. It was hard because really all is destroyed in this photos. My mother was bombed out of her house 6(!) times and had to leave the city as teenager - what saved her life for sure. She told stories about the bombing raids. I live beside a graveyard and we have a field of killed people there... many diey the same day in this late bombing raids. There is a father, his wife and five children all only one, two years in between. You become very quiet if you walk along this old mossy gravestones. War is terrible. This bombing where terrible. In your map of the naval arsenal I find the name of the street where I live and it is a very long street and I live at the other end, 2 km away from your map shown. Around even here are still a lot of bomb craters. Right tomorrow I need to leave my house because of a WW II bomb defusal. Still so many left of these bombs. It will take endless years to find and remove them. They are ticking bombs now because they are rotten. Thank you a lot for this video. Will follow your channel.

Good production with an impressive collection of historical correct still photos and film footages. Not like a lot of channels on KZitem nowadays which put random WW2 footages together and call it a day. Refreshing to see someone who is able to take the time and effort to do it right. Keep up the good work! 👍👍

Given that you do not require a degree to be an historian, you do good job. You’ve collated and analysed available sources and outlined their limitations. You have provided a credible narrative with appropriate illustrations. You have provided background context along with indications of sources used. You have drawn conclusions based solely on the evidence available to you. The photographs are primary sources. All this makes you a far more credible historian than many who claim to be. I comment as someone with an (admittedly long-held) Masters in History and having achieved several publications. You held my interest throughout. I recently visited Kiel and wish I’d seen this before I went. Seriously, very well done.

"In April 1945, the Second World War had not necessarily developed in favour of Germany". What a quaint and unique way of saying that Germany was comprehensively defeated and suffered the ignominy of unconditional surrender
@callsigndd9ls897

Only the Nazis defeated and suffered the ignominy of unconditional surrender, the normal population was happy that the shit was finally over. My father, 18 years old, was drafted shortly before the end of the war and became an assistant engineer on a minesweeper. His only wartime act was to bring half-frozen and half-starved refugees from East Prussia across the Baltic Sea to the West. My mother, 16 years old in 1945, was an assistant nurse and gave first aid to screaming, bleeding, burned and shattered people after every bombing raid. My father was lucky that, thanks to his trained profession, he was drafted into the navy in the last days of the war and did not end up on the Eastern Front.

Agreed. Most German generals said their forces wouldn't be ready until another three years. The army had no main battle tanks. The air force had no heavy bombers. And the navy could have used another few years to build the U-boat navy that Admiral Doenitz envisioned. The only one wanting conflict when it started was the esteemed corporal. SMH

Completely unnecessary destruction of those ships in port for no reason at all. Similar to refugee ships being sunk by the „allies“ and other acts of destruction

@benrobotics7582

Completely necessary actually. In a war such as this, you must deprive the enemy of any such assets that may be used against you. A weapon being obsolete, devoid of ammunition or damaged and in need of repair is no reason to spare it, and the allies would have had no way of knowing either.
@aquila3958
3 ай бұрын
@@benrobotics7582 what purpose did those ships serve other than evacuating civilians from eastern prussia, Hipper was stuck in drydock, Emden had been relegated to a training ship and Scheer was stuck in port having her guns refitted. Did the allies believe they were going to sail them out in one last brave battle? Certainly not. They were bombed mere weeks from capitulation for no other reason than keeping them out of the hands of the soviets, incase they might take the port first. You might want to take a lock at other allied missions of sinking refuge ships or ships loaded with concentration camp victims or sinking U-Boats clearly rescuing survivors. Morally rightous am I right?
@kirkstinson7316
3 ай бұрын
@@aquila3958 True, at least one U boat was attacked while rescuing people. BUT it still was an enemy vessel. Ships transporting concentration camp victims? How would allied military know the cargo? Like Japanese hell ships being torpedoed. If not marked with red cross it's an enemy ship! And bombing these ships (which is what this video is about) was during an active war. They were enemy ships and even if not useable their guns could still be removed and used
