I would debate that "we all know what it means to have faith in God" today---just as SK debated it in his time. I would also argue that the Knight of Faith in the midst of bad circumstances is the one who says, "This is a terrible situation, but my faith says that "regardless of my pain, God loves me and is good" --not one who says, "This terrible situation is good".

If you give up all logic and reason, you could become an extremist? I'd venture that extremism is a route that even logical and rational people can be lead on to. If you rely only on logic without any faith you could conclude that humanity needs to be eliminated.

I think faith for Kierkegaard would be the faith in Jesus Christ as revealed through Christian scripture. This would make it more difficult for atrocities to be committed. It should also be noted of course that many atrocities have been committed in the name of rationality and reason.

The funny thing is that Early Christianity was very Pacifistic for the time. Only becoming more accepting of serving in the Military after Constantine to align more with the Political Reality.

I always took the knight of faith idea in a softer form. Like the knight of faith concept works pretty well if you replace "god" with any grouping of values(which some have called god the embodiment of exactly that) and believe in it against all reason not to. Take morality in general. It sometimes seems that sometimes there is not real basis for why we ought to logically believe that any set of moral values are right over another. Yet people will dye defending them. I believe in things like, love, trust, kindness, forgiveness, and patience. I think the world and individual lives would be better if we all valued them more. One could argue that in terms of reason there is no solid foundation that cant be pocked at. However I simply don't care. I will always think those are good values to have. Take any villain in a movie or story who has a good reason that we find hard to argue, the hero even if understanding, will stick to his virtues and win the day. My favorite example that might put this more into perspective is Naruto Uzumaki from the show Naruto. He wants to be Hokage(village leader) even though he is a slow learner, wants to be a powerful Shinobi(ninja) and save his friend who has all but abandoned goodness and their friend ship. Even in the face of these overwhelming odds, he proclaims he will be Hokage, be a strong ninja, and get his villainess friend back to the side of goodness! And sure en0ough he does it, despite the odds against him. To me this softer form of the knight of faith is more like a message to never give up despite the world being against you, because you believe in yourself or some higher values. Or in Kierkegaard's case, God.

I think that the The Knight of Faith 's double movement is justified as long as Aristotle's golden mean is followed or better still, Buddhism's Madhyama marga (the middle path). Anything's extreme is lethal for all stakeholders involved !

Great video and great description of the "night of faith" Even though i disagree with some elements of it. Like how Abraham chose faith in light of the absurd. First off, Abraham wasn't asked to murder Isaac, he was asked to offer him up as a sacrifice, and Abraham knew that God would provide another sacrifice because he told the servants who were traveling with him that him and Isaac would both be back from the sacrifice shortly. Second, Abraham wasn't choosing faith over the absurd. Abraham had very good reasons to believe that God would do right and true just as he had done before for Abraham. Up until this point in Abrahams life God continually showed Abraham how faithful He was, and how Abraham had good reason to trust His judgment. Abraham had every reason and good judgment to trust God because God had not given Abraham any reason to do otherwise. Therefore to Abraham it wasn't ubsurd to offer Isaac as a sacrifice, it was just another request of God's that Abraham knew would be made right by God in the end. That's Faith. Knowing that God is worthy of trust because He has proven it to countless others before, and so if He done it for them, He'll do it for us because "for there is no respect of persons with God."

I identify with the Knights of Faith, but I wouldn't want to harm anyone because of my faith. The point here is if we could put aside what we "want" and learn how to think, "if it's for the good of all, then let ______ happen."

Wrong. It doesn't work. Politicians and such people were a thing for Soren Kierkegaard. If anything not only are you speaking Babels. It ends up proving Soren Kierkegaard how Utterly important it is to have this belief in God. For removing it, people will look for anything with Meaning. Heck. The Rise of Anti human Environmentalism is part of this.

Believing something which is apparently false because one would prefer that it were true is wishful thinking. It's a pernicious cognitive bias that's difficult to avoid even if one isn't part of a subculture that exalts it as the highest human virtue. Faith is indeed dangerous for all the reasons John mentioned, and IMHO a sense of epistemic responsibility is incomparably more praiseworthy.

God is not false. The disbelief in God leading to a Western society in America that rejects reality harder. You cannot deny this. The New Secular America rejects reality more than the more religious America. When asking "What is a Woman" becomes a Politically charged question. When an Observable reality everyone can see is now politically charged, You cannot claim to hold an idea being in reality anymore

Camus' approach to the Absurd seems way less problematic while leaving the necessity of God's existence out of the equation. Occam's Razor slits Kierkegaard's throat. Get rekt, Danish boy.
