Budd: I um... I pawned that years ago. Bill: You hocked a Hattori Hanzo sword? It... It was priceless... I love that line because Bill states that it's priceless, but not because of the fact that Budd has the greatest sword from the greatest swordsmith in the world, a fact only made greater since the swordsmith made an oath he would never make another sword again, making those swords that are still in the world even more valuable. No, it's priceless because it was a gift from Bill to Budd with an engraving on it: "To My Brother Budd, The Only Man I ever Loved, - Bill." And what makes this even more amazing is that we find out later Budd lied to Bill, that he didn't sell the sword and had in fact kept it the entire time, meaning despite the fact Budd and Bill had been angry with each other for so long, not even talking for years, deep down, they love each other deeply.

Then there's his current situation: While the rest of the squad are succesfull in their lives (O Ren is head of the Yakuzas, Vernita is a happy wife and mother, Elle has $1 million in cash handy), Budd is living in a trailer in the middle of nowhere and working in a titty bar. By the time Budd is introduced, you are aware of how powerful the Deadly Vipers are, but he is submissively being told off by some punk strip bar manager. You can only imagine he desperately needs the money if he's putting up with that, but he still isn't gonna sell his priceless katana, EVEN THOUGH he tells his brother he did The love for his brother is later reestated just before nailing the coffin, when he tells Beatrix "this is for breaking my brother's heart"

It's the little things in this movie that really add depth to the characters. Like making it obvious that Bill and Budd had some kind of falling out, but not mentioning what caused it. The close up on Bud's face, which lasted 6 seconds after Bill said "I have no doubt she will succeed", says a lot about his emotion in that moment: part feeling guilty because of what happened to the Bride and part feeling angry because of Bill's patronizing tone

Killer of the deadly Black Mamba, Bill naturally drives an incredibly rare 1969 De Tomaso Mangusta, or Mongoose, in Italian. His wealth alone would not be enough to ensure ownership of one of just 401 vehicles produced. He most likely killed the original owner to possess it.

I'm glad to see recognition of the unique complexity of "Bud" by some of you. "Bud" is by far my favorite character in either movie. He adds depth and irony and he's the most likeable. He's the funniest character and the most serious. He's a total slob that loves art. he's seems such a weakling then surprisingly clever and vicous. The audience admiress his principles and by far he's the best philosopher.

This scene always fascinated me because I am so curious to what Bill did to Budd that made him so mad? Was it because he had him kill The Bride and all those innocent people? Or was it something else? The lore behind this movie is a lot deeper than we were introduced to. I really wish this became a franchise. Every character in this movie has such a rich history but we only got an in-depth look at Oren and a little of Bill.
@MrConstantine02

+DaShonuff It was because of the massacre. It's implied that Budd was always against it, and only did it out of loyalty to his brother. Afterwards, he was so disgusted with himself and what he did that he cut ties with Bill and the assassin's world for good and went on to live a crap life, taking shit quietly from assholes like the manager at the titty bar, as his way to punish himself every day for the sins he committed.

Sounds great,i would like it that way...but what implied that? We know the Brothers had a falling out the last time they SPOKE and that Budd feels she deserves revenge. But Bill also thought she deserved a shot at revenge,since if a bullet to the head didnt kill her,they had no right finishing her off...when Budd got out,there is a Change he just fell on hard Times and Wanted no help from his brother.

I love how Budd responds to Bill that if Beatrix wants to fight then she has to just start some shit at the club he works at, as if Beatrix will sit down, get all brewed out, and just start raising hell.. And Bills facial expression in response is priceless, as if he's thinking "c'mon man just fucking cooperate with me or else you're going to be fucked", it's like Bill expects Beatrix to kill Budd very easily if he isn't prepared, ah but this was all an affectation that Budd was trying to put up by making himself look like the retarded drunk that has no type of skill or tactical mindset whatsoever, as he planned out what Beatrix was going to do when she gave him a visit.

I just love this scene, especially after finding out that before they filmed this scene, Madsen was asking Carradine for life advice and what he should tell his kids about the world they were going to grow up in. Carradine very modestly said that he gave the easiest answers he could think of and realized how wonderful of a soul this younger man was. Obviously, Madsen had tremendous respect for the veteran actor and needed some of his old Caine wisdom :)

I just love that last moment between the brothers. The scene doesn’t really end. It just transitions into the next one. We don’t know how Bud and Bill parted ways after Bud refused Bill’s help. Was it a nice goodbye or a bad one? That ambiguity is really nice, but you can tell how much Bill just wants to hug his brother. That final shot is also interesting because he seems so small and frail, while during the earlier part of it, he seems fairly imposing due to the closeups. The shot highlights how much Bill has lost over the last four years: his brother, the woman he loves, any potential moral highground he might have had, etc. On the other hand, Bud is a broken, bloated drunk who lives in squalor, but in that final shot, he’s in all light colors compared to Bill’s dark clothes and seems to be genuinely happy. He has his integrity and seems to be welcoming his fate.

There are a few problems like that with kill bill and i'm not sure on all of them (this one included) but it may relate to the re-edit. Years ago a good friend, who has since RIP, postulated that Budd WANTED The Bride to kill him as they way he (Budd) was living wasn't exactly enviable. Another poster thought Budd felt some measure of remorse for his actions -- hence going from pro assassin to titty-bar bouncer and living in trailer-trash squalor while every other member of the Squad was living a comfortable or opulent lifestyle. Here's to ya, pal -- you are missed.

Budd and I are a lot alike. Retired war fighters that have accepted their fate. Intelligent, introspective, but now doomed to a life of monotony and having no real "place" to assimilate back into. Happens to a lot of veterans that have strong values and a moral compass. When you're young you don't consider the why or the consequences. Once you gain some wisdom, you often realize that what you fought for was not reality and in fact, quite exploitative for a young man. I feel the same energy from Budd, it's not defeatist, it's enlightened. Introspection, truly a gift and a curse.

Prince of Darkness Sure - what I was considering is the casting. Some characters and their character arcs require specific qualities, not merely in what the actor is able to naturally or technically manifest but also in terms of what skills or abilities - such as say depth of psychological understand, nuance of observation, analytic powers and various forms of intelligence. It's not all there in just representing the script in a talented way, piece by piece. A performance like Hopkins, Lecter would have been impossible to create through mere mannerisms and gestures. To do what Hopkins did you HAVE to be intelligent as well as many other things. You could have had another lecter of course - but he would have had other qualities. What Michael Madsen does is a little more narrow, and more based on a certain persona usually that somehow mixes the cool, the brutal, the sensitive and the sardonic with a bit of a bad-boyish flourish. He could most likely not have carried the Godfather with that. Or most of the major Shakespearian Characters. Don't get me wrong I love his act but he does not have the technical ability of the other two. Imagine what Deer Hunter would have been with Madsen cast as the main character. Much more of just an action movie. The level of naturalistic, complex emotion in that movie - is very high. So casting must be either spot on or the technical ability and depth of human understanding very deep and broad. At the end of the day Madsen rarely breaks his cool. It's ok but it puts a limit on things. Bud is a great character though and he really does a lot with a fairly limited amount of time. Bud has MANY layers and still comes across fairly straight and treacherously simple.

Maybe Bill new Bud said that just to show he still wasn't on good terms with his brother. Like Bill new it was a lie, and Bud knew Bill would know he was lying. After that Bill says that Bud has to get over being mad at him, again signifying that he might just know Bud is still trying to mess with him but is genuinely concerned and wants to be taken seriously so his brother doesn't get killed for his mistakes. So it totally could be that deep. I also could be reading into it too much.
@legomylass

I think Budd lied for a couple reasons. The main reason being that he still treasures the sword despite being on bad terms with his brother. He doesn't want Bill to know that he is living like trailer trash with a million dollar sword that he won't sell. The reason he says he sold it for such a low price is because if he sold it for a lot he wouldn't be in a trailer. And $250 is so low it is an insult to Bill, which Budd likes because he's still mad. He is irritating his brother this whole scene by not taking Bill's warning seriously.
