@@ryanc9888 They didn’t have to occupy Afghanistan and Iraq to do that. They killed a few people on their list but radicalized millions. The US had a choice to make after 9/11. It was led by a generation of boomers who had known nothing but peace and prosperity after the fall of communism. This generation led by Bush was itching to show the world how powerful the US was. It was looking for an excuse to topple rival governments and establish new-conservative world order. They could have declared a war on nothing (terror is a tactic) and wasted all the good will that America had in the world and trillions of tax payer dollars and thousands of tax payer lives in waging a war on an organization of criminals and thus legitimizing them as warriors who had taken on a super power (which is the message they wanted to project). They could have forced countries to choose (with us or against us) not realizing most countries hedge their bets. For example, Pakistan caught many Al Qaeda leaders and gave them to the US but still backed the Taliban as useful proxies to keep India out of Afghanistan. They also allowed the drone strikes in the frontier provinces because the Us was killing local anti-Pakistani rebels alongside the occasional lucky shot that killed a al Qaeda guy. They could have done this while explicitly throwing away the rule of law, habeus corpus, the idea of human rights, and all the things that the country supposedly stood for because of fear of another terrorist attack. They could have furthermore backed dictators who promised to gov after “terrorists” with billions of dollars and high tech weaponry only to see those dictators use the aid to crush their own citizens (furthering radicalization). This is what they ended up doing. Or they could have treated 9/11 as the criminal act it was and acted according to law. They could have charged the conspirators publicly and put out indictments and used an international taskforce to arrest members utilizing diplomacy to enlist support and deny safe haven. If bin ladens group had been treated like criminals with investigations made without political goals (like linking him to Saddam) and no torture, the US could have easily crushed the organization that was Al Qaeda which only had 400 members on 9/11. Instead of backing dictators and refusing to use diplomacy. The Taliban famously were willing to surrender Bin Laden to Pakistan if the US showed them proof which bush was arrogant enough to discount because they were just a bunch of peasants with guns right? Infact the Taliban were negotiating to surrender between 2002-2004 when the new Afghan government was made if they were allowed to have dignity and be a part of it (which Rumsfeld sabotaged). Instead of seeing adversaries as rational actors and coming to solutions, the US swallowed its own koolaid and propaganda that it was blameless and pure and its enemies were Satan incarnate. Which is not how you run a country.

You're forgetting the reason we went to Afghanistan. They were ground zero for exporting terrorism and was a haven for Bin Laden. Yeah, you weren't old enough to know what was happening on 9/11. Americans wanted payback. Afghanistan was the legit target. Iraq? Even as a hardcore conservative, I was against that action. Tell me this genius-if you'd been President on 9/11 and you knew Bin Laden was behind it, in Afghanistan and protected by the Taliban, what would you have done? Drone? Good luck with that. Send in Seal Team Six? Intelligence had only a vague idea of where Bin Laden was. It's easy to second guess 20 years after the fact. They could not. The MOAB aka the Mother of all Bombs was first used in Afghanistan to decimate the number of taliban. What did it accomplished? On July 12 2021, the US troops SECRETLY but in HASTE abandoned their biggest most expensive airbase in Afghanistan in the dead of the night, leaving behind sophisticated military equipment. Most of these are now in the hands of the Taliban. Why the HASTE? There are many speculations. One of which is that the TALIBAN who love to die fighting are planning a massive offensive against the airbase. The US high command although confident of putting a good fight are not willing to have a mounting casualties in a time where Joe Biden is calling for complete withdrawal of american troops from Afghanistan.

@@Matt-cr4vv 100%... People always talk about how killing one terrorist creates 3, so we need to win hearts/minds by transforming their country into an American-like democracy with freedom. What they fail to realize is the second part (i.e. nation building) is just as inflammatory. They see our (US) society as corrupt, impure, and heretical. One of the main recruiting points for orgs like the Taliban is that the West is anti-Islamic and wants to corrupt everyone and we feed right into it. Of course no group is a monolith, and there are a lot of people in Iraq/Afghanistan that want a democracy w/ individual rights. However, they are not the majority. I feel bad for those people, but there is nothing we can do for them - gotta know what's in your control and what's not. No way Americans would be willing to stomach the cost of actually succeeding in one of these projects, nor should we from an ethical or pragmatic standpoint.
